BD's new tip attachment for their skins

I've messed around with BD's new skins and noticed that the old tip loop is now replaced with a tip attachment/loop. Instead of flopping the skin through the loop and sticking it back on itself, they have this new tip attachment that you clip on, screw a couple of holes, but the end is cut (no excess). The new loop is also adjustable in width. I guess this will cut down on excess material/weight, but it seems like to many parts that can fail in the bc. The tip clip/loop seems to only attach to the skin on about an inch of material.

Anyone else fondle these or use them yet? Any feedback?

I tried a search and couldn't find this discussed.

Also, no more straight glidelite, they are mixed this year and seem interesting.

A cool idea in theory but I agree it sounds like something that could fail

BD's not always perfect when it comes to ski gear - tele bindings that crack, walk mode in boots that fail, etc.

I wasnt crazy about the new last year G3 tip hooks either

I like and own BD gear ,still I have had it fail ,can you get the old system , maybe after a year of use I wouldnt be worrying about that tip loop falling apart in -35C or SFT

seems like a small thing but you are cutting the skin to the point where except for ductape all you can do is replace that loop system with the same

I wanted to bump this because I got some new glidelite mix 125mm sts skins. I just got these for x-mas and cut them a few hours ago. I haven't had any snow time with these, and will post if I have any issues in the future, but I wanted to post a little blurb about the cut process.

Everything is/was the same as previous bd skins except the new tip. The tip was easy to screw on (breaking the screws off worked fine also, which I had a little concern about) and the tip loop width adjustment was pretty cool. The only thing that took some time was get the correct length. This is usually not an issue because you have multiple slots on the sts tail, but I am using these for multiple skis (185 bd justice and 191 wrens) which have about a 6 cm difference. I had to readjust one of the tip loops because I had them to long by about 1.5 cm which put me between slot 1 and 2. After a quick fix I was on slot 3 which was what I was shooting for. Again, not a huge issue because of the sts tail, but in the past you had some tip adjustment for length (except if you stitched it together). Pretty excited about the glidelite, I've only used ascension sts in the past, but already can see the difference in weight and packability.

BD.com also has a 5 min how to video about cutting skins which is a little more informative than their paper instructions.

You can still buy the old style or make some with stuff from the hardwear store OR just fold it over the current bracket.

I have the new ones and have had no problems so far in ten day of use. If you want to be able to adjust the length for different skis use the old style though.

2 pairs skins for different skis with the new tip attachment. Got about 20+ days skinning on one pair and about 4 days on the other. So far no problems what so ever. I prefer this new screw on system compared to the fold over. Time will tell.

The new tips are wicked, lighter, better constructed, more adjustable, and I can't imagine them failing. Most mohair skin manufacturers (Colltex etc) have been using such tips on high-end skins for years. Seriously, it's nothing to worry about.

I found the old skin loop-over method failed the most, as it would come unstuck with temp changes and snow getting in-between.

I just put a pair on my orange BD skins half an hour ago. I broke the cable that goes over the tip and it was sewn to the skin. I cut the loop off the cable and stuck on the new tip. I kept the sewn on tab to reduce the chance of screw pull through. Only one complaint so far. Since I was mounting the new tip over the old sewn on loop, the screws they sold me were too short. They have a reduction where you need to snap them off flush after screwing them on. I went to the hardware store and bought stainless screws which I cut off with a cutoff wheel after they were screwed through the skins. One plus, the new tip loops are reinforced with a steel shell so your edges will not fray them like the old ones got frayed
