    Coyotes in my hood

    River coyote captured downtown

    Tribune staff reports
    Published September 22, 2004, 1:55 PM CDT

The police Marine Unit and city animal control officers today used a tranquilizer gun to subdue and capture a coyote that had been seen swimming in the Chicago River in the downtown area.

Passersby reported the animal about 7 a.m. in the river's South Branch near Adams Street, authorities said. That stretch of the river is next to Union Station and is hemmed in by skyscrapers and high steel and concrete abutments.

The animal then disappeared into a drainpipe between Adams Street and Jackson Boulevard.

It was captured and removed from the scene by animal control officers about 10:30 a.m.

Today's incident was only the latest of a series of sightings of coyotes in the central city. The animals have been spotted near Navy Pier and the Art Institute. In July, a coyote was captured and killed at Lincoln Park Zoo.

WGN-Ch. 9 and Tribune wires contributed to this story.

Actually they down deer pretty often, especially with a good snow cover. The deer punch through the snow and the coyotes can stay on top and run them down. I have a large pack by my house and they love to howl at the trains.

This is probably Daley's idea of "bum managment". Soon the coyotes will be hunting in packs on Lower Wacker.

    Bears in mine

    Bears in bozeman

I've seen scat on the rail trail behind my house too.

Pretty cool, but dont let the dogs run this time of year.

I hit a dead deer with my van this summer and the bloated carcass exploded all over the undercarriage. I was camping and the coyotes sure got exited, fuckers kept me up all night.

It’s so quiet, it’s so cool, it’s so cold

apparently there are quite a few coyotes in the Eagle River Valley, I've yet to see one though, theres also afairly sizeable pack of wolves, hear them howling whenever I camp up the valley and damn there are a lot of grizzly bears, I'd bet theres more grizzlys in the ER valley then the whole lower 48, I won't go anywhere near the river anymore without several people, theres also the general smorgasborg of blackies and moose lots of moose had 2 born in my yard once that was cool
