The police Marine Unit and city animal control officers today used a tranquilizer gun to subdue and capture a coyote that had been seen swimming in the Chicago River in the downtown area.
Passersby reported the animal about 7 a.m. in the river's South Branch near Adams Street, authorities said. That stretch of the river is next to Union Station and is hemmed in by skyscrapers and high steel and concrete abutments.
The animal then disappeared into a drainpipe between Adams Street and Jackson Boulevard.
It was captured and removed from the scene by animal control officers about 10:30 a.m.
Today's incident was only the latest of a series of sightings of coyotes in the central city. The animals have been spotted near Navy Pier and the Art Institute. In July, a coyote was captured and killed at Lincoln Park Zoo.
