So after having listened to every (yes, everyone over the course of 10 (11?) years) available GD show on archive.org (or parts of as some are too painful to listen to the whole way through) and every publicly released show, I can now conclusively say:

Top 6 Dead years in the following order:
    1974
    1973
    Spring 1990
    1977
    1978
    1972

    Runner up: 1987

I had to read that three times for it to sink in. Damn. That's solid work right there!

    Agreed, impressive for sure.

I can't disagree with your list other than flopping 72-78 (Keith was checked out more than not by mid 78 ) and adding 85 (summer specifically) as an honorable mention.

Check '82 for great mns's. Forgot which one was the music sugaree music (saw the 94 version which is not even close to as good!). I also like the aforementioned 7-13-85 and other '85 musics.

Except for the spring 90, not much surprise in Saints list... I like the high ranking for 90 since I saw 5 of those spring shows.

Still think red rocks 78 is among the best 2 night runs ever.

Alpine 8/7/82 is the one I believe you are referring to, an amazing transition. Wore that tape out I'm my car in HS.

Also, a high quality 1966 is always a fun listen.

That was a fun listen while on my long bus ride last night. I loved the jam in st stephen that is in 6. The cut at the end made me a little sad.

so i've never listened to music riding snow and i've had this ipod-y thing for a couple of years gathering dust that i have not yet read the instructions for regarding putting music on it. nevertheless, when i figure it out, i'm sure it will be dominated by dead. i honestly don't think i've listened to any of the downloadable shows on the archive. my understanding is they are mostly audience recordings rather than the stream only soundboard recordings. any suggestions on how to make a cheap decent quality library of dead shows?
    gracias.

that's some anti-pigpen era bias right there.
"fuck off you asshat gaper shit for brains fucktard wanker." - Jesus Christ
"She was tossing her bean salad with the vigor of a Drunken Pop princess so I walked out of the corner and said.... "need a hand?"" - Odin
"everybody's got their hooks into you, fuck em....forge on motherfuckers, drag all those bitches across the goal line with you." - (not so) ill-advised strategy

Yea, my preference is for more Jerry and less Pig. Also more piano (Keith).

this one caught my fancy the other day with a slightly different groove in some nice spaces

    https://archive.org/details/gd1971-0...9.sbefail.shnf

my four year old and i listen to a lot of different music but he loves a lot of grateful dead songs. i'm not a musician, but they're great tools for music, history, language, memory, sequence, intense detailed listening (separating instruments, rhythms) etc.
i like to test him once in a while in the middle of a jam and ask him what song it is or what song is coming (these were hard for me when i was actually AT the show because i would get so lost in each 10-20 minute experience that by the time they were done i couldn't remember where they started. of course, my son's not tripping his balls off either.

the other day: hey buddy, what song is this jam (no lyrics) in?

    "monkey and the engineer!" no.

    "me and my uncle!" no.

    "loser!" no.

"playing in the band!" no. (sort of shocked that he's ripping all these names off)

you're just guessing. listen to the music, think about where it leads and the words that follow.

    5 second pause.

    "JACK STRAW!!!"

    bingo.

he'll definitely be carrying the love for another generation.

Yes, my goodness. 72-78 are arguably just iterations of the same sound. Leaving out 69-71 omits the period when they were, as Bill Graham put it: "On any given night, the very greatest rock and roll band in the world."

Went out of order to get there recently on 30 Trips. One of the better shows of the group!

I've had 30 trips for about 2 months now and have made it to 1979 so far (starting at '66).
Favorites so far are 1966, 1974 (of course) and 1979.

Just discovered the app Relisten a few months ago. Not sure if it's available for Android users but it is in the Apple app store. It has many GD shows and is more user friendly than Archive.org
