    Skiing later this week

I'm hoping for a whole bunch of new (____).

So maybe Thursday at Berthoud Pass, if there's enough. Friday at St Mary's. Saturday at Torreys.

    Anybody interested?

Nice - I got high hopes for Thursday...

What if Loveland or A Basin gets more from the sky? I'm just trying to think of high up grassy slopes on the divide.

And we need a backup for this day if there's not enough snow to ski on grass. Maybe skyscraper since Berthoud is on the way there?

I feel like a junkie and my fix is coming.

    Job? What job?

Actually this little party is coming to an end. I'm in the middle of negotiating for a high stress job in Frisco. This guy/business owner says he's a skier and in the next breath he's saying why can't I just night ski at Keystone. He says he is perfectly happy to ski once a week on Sundays after 2:00 when the front rangers go home

I had a plan to wait tables at night and work at a ski area during the day and continue my dream, so I may yet fall back on that and I'd be perfectly content for the coming season. This thing I'm negotiating is actually a career move with the possibility of real money - which means nothing if I can't ski. Been there, done that.

The future is pretty exciting right now any way you slice it...

And guess what - three weeks now without a cancer stick. Yeah!!!

Excellent - I'll see about making Sunday the Torreys day. Maybe we can get the camping thing going - head out there on Saturday after class. You don't mind putting that fancy SUV to work, do you?

In a perfect world, I'd find somebody to haul me up there early enough on Saturday that I could ski it both days. I think the weather is going to be insanely beautiful this weekend. And the mountains will be whitecapped and the aspens will be glowing (if the wind didn't tear off all the leaves) Ahhh - everyone should come to the mountains this weekend!

Oh yeah, forgot to say. I will definitely be at St Mary's on Friday. 9:45 at the trailhead.

    Whatever.

I've got a backup location if the Berthoud snow isn't deep enough Thursday. My friends were skiing 12" deep there on the Sept 5-6 storm. Should be good this time too.

As for St Mary's, it turns out I have to get off the hill at noon on Friday. Since I'm leaving earlier anybody that wants to meet me there should just head up onto the snow. I'm probably going to do a few laps on the very top strip. It was in three sections the last time I was there.

I was gonna say the same thing. Don't let your hardcore-ness lead to bashing your body on rocks in September, injuring yourself for when the real dumps come.

Homer, sucks to be the voice of reason huh ?

SheRa - I love your enthusiasm but skiing Bert right now even if it snows a foot is foolish at best and as Homer said possibly season ending. Patience grasshopper

hate to snow on the party pooper parade, but it's not like anyone was thinking of dropping in on the knuckle or vortex or anything. Snow on (low angle) grass (in September) is (still) a blast.

For reference, I give you the Epic On Bachy from Sept 2002.

Bert or Loveland or something will "go," knock on wood.

Wait? For what? The groomers so I'll be safe? Any day can be season ending.

I've been skiing continuously for two years now and I'm still in one piece, knock on wood. I see no reason to stop, honestly. My new snow turns on Ptarmigan Sept 6 were so freaking fine. Did you not see: http://tetongravity.com/forums/showt...ight=ptarmigan Look for my stuff partways down the thread...

If I don't like it at Berthoud, I'll go elsewhere. You're right that it could be too thin there. But I will be skiing this storm. And loving it. I have friends heading out today that want me to go. See how much patience I'm showing waiting until Thursday.

BTW, have you ever biked the Peaks Trail from Breck Peak 8 to Frisco? I just did that last week, my first real MTB ride. I went over the handdlebars once so I've got a fat bruise on my shoulder. But I had moments of technical glory - in my own mind anyway. Manoman that was so fun.

I agree with Board and Homer on this one.

Come on Mir, they are calling for 2-5"!! Please be realistic. It's great that you are all psyched for the snow, but the pow day call outs are not necessary quite yet. I won't consider skiing Bert until there's at least a few feet on the ground up there. It's just not worth the risk of injury to yourself or the skis for that matter.

well, maybe I'll just drive up and stomp around in it and take pictures to drive you all crazy then. That would still be fun.

Dave, have I got your ski poles? They're a leetle long for me.

If you decide you want to do Torrey's this weekend, lemme know. A couple of friends were up there on Thursday and said it was really nice.

It's pretty much whiteout in Summit County. They're running the snow plows right now. I saw two little girls playing in it. There's a snowman outside the door. I got some up my nose.

My friend that works at Loveland said there was 4-5" on the ground this afternoon.

    Life is good.

    edit - moron moment

I just skied Loveland Pass down to the road...

And I almost died! Just kidding.

It was fun and I'm doing it again tomorrow. Well, assuming it snows a little more tonight, which it should. I forgot just how easy it is grab some turns there.

Bare ground to a foot deep. Generally between 4-6". I stayed above the gully to the side of the north facing woods, but some other people went right down the drainage. I had some nice turns once I was in the trees. Still had to be pretty slow and careful. Didn't hike up at all - that wasn't worth it.
