looks interesting if they've got some new fangled technology to keep the noise at a respectable level.. 18mp on a crop is pretty retarded otherwise. new 24 point AF, wireless ettl control (finally), hd video, 8fps..

If the images are finally as clean as Nikon's D3, D300, D700 series at ISO 1600 and up then I am in like Flint.

$1699 msrp, pretty sweet!
Now that it is confirmed as 60fps in 720. Yes. I will be purchasing one soon.
These two items sound rather interesting:
Different AF points can be set for vertical or horizontal orientation, so photographers can automatically switch between landscape and portrait shots without touching a button. The EOS 7D is also the first EOS to introduce a Dual-Axis Electronic Level – in the viewfinder and on the LCD - that indicates both pitch and roll angles. This feature is particularly useful when shooting landscapes to ensure a level horizon, or when used in conjunction with a Tilt and Shift lens to level the camera.
Anyone here think these features WON'T be available on Cannon's next full frame camera??
Personally, if I were a cannon person, even at that price, I'd hold off for the FF version...
This is the worst pain EVER!
My thoughts exactly. 1.6x crop blows. And I don't think $1700 is such a great deal when you consider that used 1d MarkII's and 5D's are going for ~$1000 now.
15 years of digital evolution and Canon has yet to produce a full-frame digital camera that can shoot faster than 5fps...
edit: although I must say the new metering technology sounds intriguing.
Hijack: The new Sony A500 announced last week, while not being full frame, has an interesting solution to shooting high frame rates (7FPS). The shutter, mechanically, is 3.5 FPS, but the sensor captures 2 images for every flip of the mirror. That's a good (read: cheap) solution and I hope some Sony engineer was well compensated for it.
1.6 crop isn't that bad if you are shooting sports (which lots of folks on here are) or wildlife. The Focal length bump, can be good in those situations...
This is the worst pain EVER!
As anyone who used to shoot 35mm canon EOS would tell you, they should have called it the EOS-3D. And yes, I'll get one... when I have $$$. All it is missing is Eye Control Focus.

I personally like the 1.6x crop. It really provides some nice distance. I'll be getting one and selling my 40D when it comes out.
Only for the 2nd image. When the mirror closes, focus, aperture and exposure are re-calculated. All major camera manufactures calculate max FPS with fixed focus, apertures and exposures (and sometimes locked mirrors.... )
And none of this mentions the ability of the camera to write to the memory card when shooting at maximum frame rates. Even with a high speed CF card (166x), I have found that when shooting Raw+jpg on my A900, the are only so many 25mp images + 8 MB images that can be stored and written to the card at one time. That number is somewhere around 10 or 12....
This is the worst pain EVER!
I'll be buying one asap. Perfect 2nd body to my 1dmk3. Sports shooters should be all over this rig.
You need to not get wuzzled by the model numbers. Anyone that honestly thought Canon would be replacing the 5dmk2 this quickly is an idiot. The huge story here is the AF system and what that will mean for the next 1 series bodies. It may very well be that this is the best AF system Canon has on the market right now and you get it with full 1080 HD video for $1700. Noise and MP / sensor ratios are foolish at best. If we've seen anything in the past 2 years it's that there is no direct relationship between the two. High ISO performance is improving across the board by leaps and bounds.
If I had money, yes. I would like to replace my 30D in a year or so with a used 7D, if I can find one. For now though, my main priorities are fixing the IS on my 17-55 and getting a 1.4x extender for my trip to Africa in December.
I do wish the 7D had similar specs with 12-14MP instead of 18. I also hope the 60D next spring is cut down to 12MP.
Thank you Canon- I think this will push Nikon towards a very affordable prosumer version of the D3 with 1080 video capability.

HA!
Where are you getting this info? Because so far what I have read suggests otherwise. (And it is only the 550, not the 500 that has a Speed Priority Mode of 7 fps.)
From Imaging resource:
"The Alpha DSLR-A500 is capable of shooting bursts of five frames per second through the optical viewfinder, or four frames per second in live view mode. The Sony Alpha A550 matches these figures, but also offers an additional burst mode which allows an impressive seven frames per second with either the viewfinder or live view - the slight catch being that focus and exposure are locked from the first frame."
From Sony press release on DP Review:
"Sustained shooting speeds of up to 4 fps can be achieved in Live View Mode, rising to 5 fps with the optical viewfinder. New Speed Priority mode on the DSLR-A550 raises the bar further still, shooting at an incredible 7 fps (with AF and AE setting maintained from the first frame )."
From Digital Camera Info:
"The A550 also offers a speed priority mode which locks autofocus and autoexposure with the first shot and then churns out 7 shots per second."
Never seen a 166x. Maybe 133x or 266x?
If you use 133x cards, you should switch to something UMDA. Won't give you more raw+jpg images in a burst, but will cut the write time to about one-quarter that of the slower cards.
Since we've drifted way off topic, how do you like your A900?
I'm thinking of getting a few A850s to go with all the nice glass I was smart enough to keep from back in my Minolta days. Or do you think there will be a A950 in the near future?
I love the 900, if you are ever in the SLC area, PM me and we can go mess around and shoot for a while. There are some things it does really, really well, yet a few features I wish it had (the ability to download pics wirelessly). Video is not one of them. The low light noise at higher iso's (for jpgs) isn't the best and that could be improved. If you shoot raw, then that isn't an issue. Hoping for a firmware update to fix that at some point. I think we are several years away from a a950. It's amazing how fast you can fill up a card and a drive with 25mb images.
I bought Cmor's a200 he was selling off ebay as a companion to the a900. Those two bodies in combo work really well together. I put the 18-200 non-full frame DT lens on the a200 and have a work horse camera that I can throw in a pack or in a parka. That body allows me to be the dork I am...![]()
I still need to get a few lenses for my a900. I really, really want the 70-200 2.8 G lens, but since I shot my wad on the body, I might end up with the sigma. I have heard really good reviews for the siggy equivalent. Apparently, it's very, very close to it's sony equivalent.
Which kinda brings me to another point, we are rapidly closing in on a point where the limiting factor won't be the resolution of digital sensors, but the resolution ability of the lenses themselves (simple physics relating to the wavelengths of light). The next revolution in digital imagery will be the ability of printers to print high DPI images.....
