Missing the tail end of good spring skiing due to a [ame="http://www.tetongravity.com/forums/showthread.php?t=195462"]road trip[/ame], I figured I'd hung up my board for the summer...

When we got back it looked like there might be just enough snow for my traditional season closer

so, with plans to head up to the lake for the 4th (like everyone else on the west coast), we might as well try to go ride snowboards beforehand...

    heading up the ridge

once we got to the bowl, it looked a little thinner and cuppier then I'd hoped

but it's still better than hiking downhill

sarah had no interest in skiing this rodeo so she hiked the summer trail with old maddaroo and met us at the bottom for the hike out

after I dropped the dogs off at the folks sarah and I headed up to south lake to meet some friends and motored out for an afternoon sail...

the boat and some of the crew were three sheets to the wind

after returning to dock to grill some dinner we headed on out to get our place for firework viewing.

all in all, not a bad independence day

    so, Lassen still seems good.
what about the Sierra Buttes out 89 way?
what about Echo Lake (is that totally burnt yet?)
    how is AM this week?
what about stuff off Donner Pass and Castle Peak area?

and in terms of Squaw, can you hike that ishit or is it closed off unless you pay for the tram ride up?

    MEDICAL UPDATE JULY 7

hey friends not to bring down a stoke thread, just wanted to throw out a brief update on my condition.

    i) I am in the hospital and am in good shape following lung surgery yesterday
ii) My spirits are high and I am capable of receiving texts, emails, and TGR PMs. I recommend this over phone calls due to a really sore throat from extended intubation and between having people/nurses around or maybe I'm napping I can't often have a conversation. I also can reply to texts and emails, not PMs as I will be using my laptop only very sporadically.
ii) I will hopefully be released on Friday with an expected 4 weeks to full recovery with 5% chance of pneumothorax relapse. High altitude activities will be a-okay, though with having to manage the risk and hazard of incurring pneumothorax on the mountain.

comment or reply here so we can keep this thread pity party free (I'm not looking for a pity party and will kick you in the nuts if you try to throw one!)

Curious about this as well. It is just pretty far out of the way for me so if anyone has some condition reports please share. It would suck to go all the way out there and get skunked

Lake Tahoe ski resorts report second busiest season in history

    By Jason Shueh
    North Lake Tahoe Bonanza

LAKE TAHOE — With summer sweltering the area with heat, Lake Tahoe ski resorts have tallied numbers from the 2009-10 season, announcing a 17 percent increase in skier visits.

According to a Friday announcement from Ski Lake Tahoe — a group composed of Alpine Meadows, Heavenly, Kirkwood, Mt. Rose, Northstar-at-Tahoe, Sierra-at-Tahoe and Squaw Valley USA — 2009-10 was the second busiest season ever for Tahoe, and more than four times the national average recorded by the National Ski Area Association.

The resorts attributed the visitor influx to the more than 600 inches of snow that fell — double the national average — and a long winter with some ski lifts operating from Halloween through the Fourth of July.

Consistent snowfall helped, with early season skiing coming from El Niño storm systems and supplemented by snowmaking and spring storms that left resorts with mid-winter conditions and base depths at more than 100 inches to finish the year.

“The combination of reliable snow conditions coupled with unbeatable vacation deals and a totally unique, memorable winter experience has become the trademark of the Ski Lake Tahoe resorts,” said John Wagnon, president of Ski Lake Tahoe.

Reno-Tahoe International Airport's decision to increase its number of airlines and the number of flights into the Lake Tahoe area also helped bring in larger crowds, according to Ski Lake Tahoe.
"The mind, once expanded to the dimensions of larger ideas, never returns to its original size."

imagine if some of those resorts with tons of snow had actually stayed open beyond April and May...

Had dinner with El C and Mrs. C, then had a drink with pistola this evening. Pistola says he lurks instead of posting because he doesn't have anything to say; I told him that I don't let that stop me. We got a bunch of good people on this here board.

You gents are addicts. Got to love the spirit.

Beta-wise: Shasta east side is still skiing well. Snow down to about 8K, then patches down to 7.8K. About a mile plus from the car. Top two thousand feet off the top is still very smooth. Suncups are not really that bad until 10K.

I know Shasta is not Tahoe, but it is California.
