Here's a SLIM teaser shot from the Spur this morning...

I drove around the West Shore on Sunday. People were parked and gearing up for hiking (normal hiking, not skinning) at Emerald Bay.
As for rock climbing, Donner Pass was popping off late Saturday afternoon when I headed back into Truckee after skiing DSR...I musta passed at least 6 cars and seen a half dozen or more folks dangling from ropes on several different rock faces...
Here are some pictures from the Maggot Memorial Day Weekend Micro at Donner Ski Ranch on Saturday.
The morning started out with Memorial Day weekend fresh tracks:
When we got to the bottom of the backside we had to wait for the clearing of the chairs of the past week's snow:
After a morning of smooth soft freshies, the afternoon provided warmed-up creamed corn.

Donner Ski Ranch has a great vibe. It was fun and it felt good to support a resort that stays open until the snow is gone.
i fucking hate you guys so muchholy shit that looks tasty.
This is an awesome shot and you should send it over to the folks at Donner for their history and to all the resorts with snow that are already closed with the caption "WTF?" I'd like to get up there next week to support the cause, does anyone have a solid estimate on their closing date?

i'll go saturday!!!
nevermind, they are closed!!!
i'm glad they stayed open, but am no longer a fan of their slogan!!
it should read "Open weekends til the owners are gone!"
edit-and i gotta call bs on the non-mag MJ thing. How many tr's has he been in now?

Fixed. I'm such a noob.
I need some advice. I'm going to take my son and a couple of his friends on a little bc adventure week after next (17th or 18th). They're all good skiers so all but the gnarliest of terrain is fair game, but we may not all have crampons (although renting is an option). Definitely don't all have skins - but I'm pretty sure I have enough snow shoes for everyone - I can skin in too, but they don't have free-heeling bindings. So, hopefully we can find something that requires a fairly short hike from car to snow, and turns to boot-packing territory fairly quickly. A combination of hiking and car shuttle is also an option and would be awesome if we can get a bunch more vertical.
Location needs to be off Route 4. We're staying with friends in Arnold and plan to do this as one or two day trips, rather than any overnighting. I've driven that road in the summer and mountain biked around Lake Alpine and Bear Valley a little, but don't know what any of the roadside skiing is like.
Can anyone suggest some good options, given the above parameters? Short version of criteria:
Day trippable from Arnold
Snow comes close to road
No long on-snow flat approaches
Low/No avy / cornice danger
Fairly low exposure i.e. no fall = die/hurt territory
Partly car shuttle-able would be cool
If you suggest something, can you give me fairly detailed instructions on how to find it as I come up the hill from Bear Valley / Arnold. Landmarks or Google Maps pinpoints would be awesome. Thanks.
If anyone else is around and wants to join in the fun, you're more than welcome. The boys (and maybe one girl) are all high school age. This will not be a 420 friendly day.

In any case, if you're ever really in this situation make sure you at least bargain in a couple of fluffers.

Sinecure,
I'm interested in joining in. There are plenty of good options off of Highway 4. I have skied a few before. Highland Lakes would be great, but I have doubts about the road being open. There is a pretty easy approach to some good options close to Ebbetts Pass. I'll send more details and links to photos of the area in a PM. I can also test ski/recon the area prior to your trip.

Anyone up for a few Kirkwood (Wall, Cirque) turns early Saturday morning...or Round Top (Moon Crescent) or nearby....?
some buddies and i hiked up Judah on Sat and found some nice snow off the ridge there, then hiked back up and over the train tunnel and had another nice run down to the road. not bad for early June
still curious how all y'all are accessing SB, since on Sat. of Mem Day wknd Vets and I drove down the Judah road and were promptly stopped by the key code gate they have erected barring entrance to the resort unless you are an employee or home owner.
didja hike up the PCT from further up Donner Pass?
that said, how's the snow holding up in that region?
Park at the Sugarbowl Academy right at the top of the summit road and skin in next to Lake Mary and skin to the summit of Mt. Judah. This is the normal approach for things like DL Runs.
Is it cool to park at the academy (when it was ASI they were unhappy with people parking in the lot)? You can park along old 40 (after plow season) or at the scenic overlook or the china wall pullout of course.
I'm up for the cirque 666666666666666666666
Ha....well then...I'll be in touch.
txt from powdork at 10:30AM: top of vista still firm.
I'll be some where around those parts tomorrow.
June Cirque is just pure craziness. I love this year.
