    Thumbs down College applications

I've spent all day getting filling out these damn things and it occured to me I don;t want to go to college I want to ski. why does society make people spend most of their lifes doing something they don't want to do so they can do something they want to do. Before today I really wanted to be a cfo or investment banker, but the thought of working for the weekend seems so backwards. maybe I'll be a broker and take the winters off a 9 to 5 and just manage my own portfoflio. or I could do the forest service/firefighter thing.

don't know what the point of that was but on a plus its snowing in the mountains.

you should definitely go to college, it will make you a competitive applicant for future ski-town dishwashing jobs.

"I don't want to work; I want to ski" probably won't fly too well in the "real-job" world... Surely I would like to ski all the time, but I try to be a little more realistic. Don't burn your own dreams with false aspirations, man. Ski bumming with a real job is pretty damned tough unless your name is Derek Taylor (KD, do you have a "real job", or does "real job," insinuate "not fun job"...? ) or something like that. I'm probably not one to give advice because I am currently in the application process as well. However, it never hurts to apply and decide later that you don't want to go.

And yes, I agree it sucks that we are forced to do stuff in order to have fun. It's called sacrifice, and it can be a bitch at times, but working probably makes skiing that much more fun.

You can tell me to shut up now...

    IT'S SNOWING! FKNA!
    Days on snow 06-07: 3
    Days behind a boat summer 2006: 24

"Coming here and asking whether you need wider skis is like turning up at the Neverland Ranch and asking Michael if he'd like to come to Tampa with the kids" -bad roo.

I'd rather go out with a fat chick than go through the college application process again. It is quite possibly the worst thing ever.

edit: on the other hand, getting that first acceptance letter in the mail is SUCH a great feeling. The feeling of knowing that all the work you've done so far is finally paying off truly rocks.

If I had to do it again I would most definitely try and stay with the common app as much as possible, and I would try to do everything else online. Much easier that way.

    It's so simple:

work >> money >> food >> live to ski

    or you could:

    ski >> starve >> die.

    Any questions?

You must lead an easy life if this is the worst thing ever...

Pollard, you should definatley go to college, but somewhere where you can ski and pick a major that you think you'll enjoy. By enjoy, I mean both at school and after school. What kinds of stuff are you looking at?

I've said this before and I'll say it again, college is not hard if you have any discipline. Spend 2 hours per day in the library and I guarantee a 3.0 to the learning disabled. If you are at all capable, magna cum laude is a distinct possibility.

That's 2 hours in the library plus another 2-4 hours of class per day. 6 hours a day max. Considering that even the dishwashing jobs in ski towns that you need to sustain a living demand 8 hours per day, the trade off is great.

Most work through college. I had a number of jobs. You learn how to live cheap and you can still limit yourself to 8 hours of dedicated labor per day.

With any fore thought you can study somewhere in the mountains and ski everyday if you like.

If you like drinking and getting laid, there's no better place than College.

In conclusion: focus for a few short hours a day, ski everyday, party your face off and get laid a lot. Sounds good to me. Plus you might learn something.

PS: I am writing this from my desk, have been at work all day.

    PPS: You're right. This sucks

What really irked me about college applications, was the money you had to enclose for a "processing fee". Yeah, I know SOMEBODY has to go through all those shitty apps, but given the amount tuition costs these days...seriously. Basically, it's a foretaste of the amount you'd end up spending there...in principle it's "give us money, so we can consider allowing you to pay us significantly more money, forcing you into severe debt."

I even got into it once with a professor over something similar, I believe it was over her attendance policy or something like that, and I pointed out to her that since I'm paying to go to school, and that she was going to get her money whether I was there or not, and whatever happened to the customer is always right...she lost it and went beserk on me. Last class I ever took from her.

But, you gotta pay to play - and the only decent wages come with a degree of some kind. Besides, I don't think you learn a great deal in college, it's a lot more about the experience of being away in a strange new environment, and the exposure to new ideas.

This is how I solved the conundrum. While in school I joined a volunteer ski patrol. Free skiing, beer, chicks. Good times were had by all. Stay in college as long as you can. Don't ever leave.

I mean ideas, other than facts...I was a history major. I can't say that I know all that much, and am much a knowledgeable historian.

I was speaking more of the exposure to the ideas of others...embracing multi-culturalism, etc.

For example, at my high school we had goths, but no hippies. Bozeman is teeming with hippies. Hence a new experience for me.

Sarcasm, dude. Sarcasm. Perhaps tedious or aggrivating would have been a better word to use?

Either way, my point is that the college application process really really sucks.

The only bad thing about college is the application process.

I'd say Honc's estimation for daily work hours are highly inflated. Unless you're doing something very specific like engineering or microbiology, the amount of time you put into school is limited....at least in my experience.

If nothing else, college is a great excuse to party and get laid.

Stay in school kids. I have discovered that life, no matter what kind of degree you have, is easier with said degree. You could have a degree in archeology and end up a manager in an office building and the degree will make the difference between getting the job/not getting the job and making a good salary and not making a good salary. School is NOT as hard as real life as I'm sure many people will agree to. Skiing will always be there, the time limit of your parents funding your education/drinking problem is limited.

Then again, do what you want, it's your life.

Dipstik how you liking St.A's? good cafeteria eh? you getting cocked at TEKA parties, crushing the clam box and throwing up in humanities class? wait till you gotta walk all the way to french class on the 5th floor, hungover out of your tree and that bastard french teacher gives you un-ending shit for being american. it's super.

thanks for all the intput. I was just alittle overwhelmed with the idea of making such life changing decsions so soon. I looked at my dad and upper managment souless whore hes become. and decided that climbing the corporate ladder isn't for me. I think I'm gonna with the stock broker thing so I wont be tired down and then later I'll have the business knowledge I need to start my own business. plus I kinda have a thing for trading stocks. in the past nine months I've turn 50,000 in over 3 million on virtual stock exchange.

but for the kids that actually have to pay for their college it sucks. Just a big way to rack up a lot of debt . Sure, you can not have the debt if you work every goddamn night after school and have no life other than that. But i don't see the need of wasting a few years of my life like that.

For me, college got old really fast. I hated the stupid intro classes i had to take to get into the advanced classes i take now. It all seemed like a big waste of time. I also don't really like livng in a college town. Too many goddamn people everywhere all tryhing to do the same little thing around here. I know i'm just adding to it, but i wish i could live somewhere else.

I'm not going to college next semester. Working a couple days a week is hopefully gonna help pay off some the debt i've got and still manage to continue doing what i love. It is also hopefully gonna allow me to work a summer job that is in the place that i would rather be more than anything.

Wow, i guess i'll end my rant here.

College is great, that's all I've got to say. Applications are a pain in the ass, as is the concept of being "accepted" or not, based on how you represent yourself on a piece of paper. But, having said that, it's the coolest thing - when else will you be surrounded by thousands of you r peers who all have a thirst for life and whatever adventure it may offer (whether that be drinking heavily every night, poring over books and notes to learn as much as you can, discovering the outdoors, skiing, or whatever else). It's like living in an insulated "real world" - you've got responsibility for your own time and the results that it will produce, but no REAL responsibility (esp. if your parents are paying or you get good scholarships).

Plus, college gives you options, and who can put a value on that?!? I graduated, ski bummed in 2 hemispheres, and now I work (been here all weekend if that counts for anything). But, I still skied 75 days last year, have the ability to save money to fund another winter (and summer) off, know that I have skills and credentials to fall back on, and if I'm totally out of ideas, I know I can always go get a masters and be marketable again.

Enough rant - but go, and see college for the opportunity that it is. Take advantage of it, grow, and add the perspective to your quest for the answer to the ultimate question: what do I really want out of life?

Unfortunatly the cafeteria is under new managment or something and I hear from all the upperclassmen that the food this year sucks in comparison to previous years. It still isn't bad though, at least compared to high school food.

And as for parties....not so much yet. I've been busting my balls trying to pass calculus and spanish and have spent wayy to much time doing homework. College is a lot more work than I thought it would be...

Other than that though, it's been a good time. The scenery is great and my room is HUGE. I got put in a quad and we all just brought a bunch of shit so now our room is stocked: 2 TV's, 3 fridges, 2 microwaves, blender, couch, Xbox/N64/PS2, surround sound, 2 guitars and 1 amp.
