    TR: Summah in Maine

I have to remember these days when I'm jonesing for real snow/terrain in the middle of winter around here.

Life in Portland, ME means dropping the boat in the water about 300 yards from my house and being out here in a couple hours.

Sometimes it takes a ferry ride for an assist.

One of about 15 seals swimming around us, curious kids. Saw two porpoise's the day before about three feet off my bow.

    Backside of our ghetto campsite

    Ghetto proper

    Front yard of the hood

    Urban launch point

    End o' story

Looks like a real pretty trip. Bet you saw some killer sunrises. How bad were the bugs up there? The touring down in NC can be pretty brutal sometimes when the mosquitoes come out.

I've seen a lot of seals this year, not in my kayak but on my surfboard. They are such curious creatures, and I usually don't get a glimpse of them unless there is a storm or a deeper surf spot. This year I have had 2 encounters, one a little too close for comfort.

Bugs were not bad, a little breeze would have kept all the skeeters away. The sand fleas were probably the worst. Them and the slug that slithered up a tequlia bottle to get at the smoked oyster tin perched on top.

Yeah where we saw them it was about 100' deep. They're funny, if you get close enough to make them curious they'll come check you out, too close and they scatter. They also usually surface behind you and disappear when you turn to look at them.

Last year I was striper fishing at Higgins Beach and saw one come up with a striper in it's mouth, food chain in action.

This is apparently a big year for seals. In May, at my local rivermouth, we counted over 120 seals at one point. There are enough of them that the fishermen are having problems with it; last month, at a small(ish) point beach, we came across two that had been shot.

Lots of mackerel in the water just beyond the break at my local beach this week.
