Thread: some damn good IPA's out there

Still at home in Tahoe. Wife works for the school system and I work from home. So we were just going to wing it. Thing is we just got 10 inches of dust on crust and now we are backpedaling on what to do. I think we are going to bail based on NYE crowds and hotel prices.

Visited the in-laws and tried dozens of different IPAs I can't get in the Utah DABC. Spent a lot of money on obscure brewery beer and honestly there are a lot of average IPAs out there, or more likely there are so many good ones these days few stand out as great.

The best ones were more well-known, already in my FILs fridge and therefore didn't cost a dime: a variety of Stone IPAs, S.N. Torpedo (I know it's not cool to like this beer but I like this beer), Terrapin Hopsecutioner, and Dogfish 90 Minute. Not sure if the FIL is annoyed I drank a lot of his good beers and appear to have a drinking problem. But I gotta take advantage of my time out of Utah whatever the cost.

Made a brief pilgrimage to "downtown" carlsbad last night while spending the day at legoland. Nine ipa's on tap, five brewed inhouse, if i remember right. Had the inhouse session ipa, "shoulder hopper". Not as full bodied as the stone version, but still very yummy. I also sample their barleywine, 16% abv! I havent had an ale that high in abv in many years; last being 120minute dogfish head. Damn; pretty complex ale. Not a high hop character that some breweries are doing these days with their barleywines. Definitely for sipping. I love pizza port!

Well, if you DO ever go to PDX ... here are some rad places to drink beer, by district. I don't hang out downtown because I don't like downtown.
NW (more yuppie) - Deschutes Taproom, Lompoc ... never been to Bridgeport but I don't like their beer
NE (more chill) - Hop & Vine, Saraveza taproom and bottle shop, Breakside, haven't been to Widmer but I hear it's a cool joint
SE (more grungy) - Commons (let me just repeat this 3 more times ... Commons, Commons, Commons ... MUST GO, probably my favorite beer in PDX), Cascade, HUB, APEX

There are only about, ummm, 100 more places that I haven't listed. It is difficult to walk more than 3 or 4 blocks in most parts of Portland without running into a local bottle shop or taproom with a half-decent selection. I could spend about 2 weeks there (in the summer) doing nothing but drinking beer. Seriously just open Yelp and search "Beer" near Current Location, and chances are you'll find some fun places with local beer on tap.

Well, finally got to enjoy 1 full can! This one tops my list right now. Had a Heady the next day and I would take Second Fiddle over it any day.

Just finished of a sixer of Sculpin. Good stuff, definitely my kind of IPA, nice and fruity/citrusy. But at 14.99 a sixer, I might reserve that purchase for special occasions.

Welcome aboard the train my friend. There's another canning coming up so I think we can upgrade you to a 4 pack.

On the Sculpin note, I saw that they are brewing a grapefruit sculpin now, I'm intrigued...anybody tried it yet?

Yeah it's pretty good, tastes like actual grapefruit not just a hint of it either or the citrus from the hops. Not sure I'd buy a six pack for myself but I was happy to do my share and drink two of them a couple nights ago.

Does it sell out that quick? Meaning you can't get any right now?

Gonna hit the Bissell Bros and Rising Tide this week. Hopefully they have some beer!

Yes, usually same day at the brewery, next at the latest but with it being on the regular brew/canning schedule now and with a wider distribution to retailers it should be much more readily available. The first few cannings in Dec. were nuts, more CT, MA cars in the parking lot than VT. I was also told that mastermind will make an appearance again at some point in the future, probably spring, and will be available on a limited basis and possibly regularly once the expansion is complete.

Have a friend from here that now lives in Portland and was hoping he would come home for xmas with some substance but he got skunked...at least he came back with some RT Daymark, which I hadn't tried yet. Solid pale along the lines of all day ipa or OC hop session and would make a good summer beer but not one that I will be looking to stock up on. RT has me hooked on Cutter these days.

Another sleeper that I had for the first time on tap at Castlerock Pub (one of the best resort bars going imo btw) last week was Foley Bros. Fair Maiden. DIPA brewed with 7 (?) different hops and right up there in a class with similar brews from HF, Lawson's, Fiddlehead etc. Definitely worth trying if you come across it and also available in 22oz bottles.

I keep hearing more and more about Wormtown Be Hoppy...Calling MMP, when are you coming north again???

Just got delivered here for the first time today, bought it despite the heavy price tag and not regretting it. Definitely not subtle on the grapefruit but it doesn't completely overpower the hops either.

I'm turning into a total NEBCO fanboi, but with good reason. Had some of their Supernaut IPA on tap this evening and it was tremendous.

Well I guess I'm done buying Lagunitas, I don't drink the beer of whiny bitches. Those labels look nothing alike, and comparing the fonts is a long stretch.

My thought as well. It's ridiculous. One could argue that Sierra Nevada made Lagunitas possible. If it wasn't for SN Pale Ale, the craft brew industry would be 15 years behind where it is now.
