    Email question (nerd advice needed)

I'm trying to send email from Outlook Express and I keep getting this message:

"The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'xxx'. Subject 'hello?', Account: 'UW Internet Mail', Server: 'smtp.washington.edu', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '530 5.7.1 Relaying denied. Proper authentication required.', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 530, Error Number: 0x800CCC79"

What hell does that mean and what can I do about it?

I was using Mozilla and I was having the same problem even after using the schools email set-up program.

    Help.

It means that one of the recipients was rejected by the server.

    Sorry.

It looks like it means that you're sending to an incorrect alias. Try sending something to yourself. Or an alias you know is valid.

    Heh, thanks.

Weird thing is sometimes I can send to that same person using a web based program but as soon as I try to use Mozilla or Outlook it rejects it.

It means that your local SMTP server doesn't want to be used by random people to send email outside its own domain, for example because it doesn't want to be used to propagate spam. So it refuses to do relaying unless you're authenticated. You may ask your university's IT guys how you can authenticate yourself so that you can send email to that address, if you want to do be able to use a mail program using smtp.washington.edu.

    drC - I am not a nerd.
