    Extreme Oil (PBS)

Very good documentary on getting oil out of the Caspian Sea. It is stunning to see the lengths industrial nations will go to get oil. Making it all the more difficult is the politcal instability in the region.

This is not news, but when the Soviet Union dissolved, it literally fell apart. A quarter of last night's show was devoted to showing the hulking wreck of Soviet infrastructure.

It will be shown on Monday nights over the next three weeks.

If oil politics interests you, check out a book called The Prize by Daniel Yergin. Also made into a documentary for pbs, great read and very informative. A history of oil relations from the first discovery to present day.

I am seriously unschooled in the ways of geology, but I find the dynamics behind oil exploration to be pretty cool stuff.

I got freaked out after reading a report by Matt Simmons of Simmons and Company. Dude is wicked smaht and was all about the imminent shortage of oil, specifically the oil coming from Saudi Arabia.

It is what, almost a decade old, but the history to that point is incredible. What people will do for the lifeblood of society.

I've got a book in my collection called "The Seven Sisters", probably much like the one mentioned. It chronicles the discovery of oil, the Rockefeller years and when OPEC woke up.

Pretty dry reading, but rather interesting. Most of it is how the various entities that compromise today's market came about

    2nd installment

last night's show dealt with drilling and soil extraction in alaska (ANWR to be specific) and canada. seemed like everyone on both sides of the fence had plenty to say but no answers to give. in the midst of the rationalizing and buck passing done by lobbyists/protesters and oil men/proponents, they showed a grounded view of the people, environment and fauna directly affected by oil extraction and spillage.

check it out next week if you can, hopefully they'll replay this series.

oh and those views they took from their airplane were unreal... the distortion created by shooting through the plane prop along with the camera fps made the landscape disturbingly alien.
