Mammoth - where to stay? Help!

I'm going to Mammoth Sept 22-25 for the DH race. Never been there before. I was hoping to jump in on someone elses condo, but that's not looking so good right now - we were going to bring sleeping bags and crash on the floor but we're not sure about space. So where can you get a room cheap? Or better yet - is anyone else going that wants to share lodging?

I've been told that there's a shuttle service that get you up to the upper part of the mountian where the race is going on and there's cheaper lodging farther down the mountain. Right now it's 2-4 people looking for a cheap room, anywhere with access to the shuttle, since we're getting a ride with other people who are staying in an expensive condo on the upper mountain (we can leave bikes in their enclosed trailer at the race venue so that helps). I've been searching on the net but I haven't found a map to help me figure out what the area I'm looking for is. Otherwise the rooms up at the Village/Juniper Springs are $175 a night or more. Yikes.

    Ideas?

Altagirl - check visitmammoth.com for all lodging and prices, etc. I recommend you stay at the Econo Lodge for cheapest rates - it's on the shuttle line. So is the Holiday Haus -and both are around $50/night. Everything in Mammoth is near each other, so don't stress. And all the cheapo motels are clean and decent and walking distance to the Village Gondola. I think that site has a town map, too.

PM me for any more info --

There's a bunch of Motel6/Econo Lodge places right on the main drag when you drive into town - pretty much any of these, or anything else in Mammoth Lakes is on the shuttle routes. They have a bunch of shuttles that run pretty consistently.

Awesome. I was just a little worried without looking at a map and knowing I won't have a car...

    Thanks!

Confirm that the shuttles are running. I seem to remember that they stop or at least run much less frequently in the summer.

I'll second the vote for Holiday Haus. There are two parts to that motel though. The new part is fairly nice (as cheap motels go), but the old part is pretty ghetto. However, you can get a large one bedroom condo with a kitchen for about the same price as a standard motel room, if you're willing to stay in the old part. You could easily fit four people in the condo, and food would be cheap too.

Yah, from mm.com while discussing the Looney Bean moving :

Brents new place is next to Do It Center, lost his lease, the owner's daughter of the old location is opening her coffe shop there as well, damn coffee overload in town!!!! Looney is opening a second place in Bishop, as well as a crepe & wine shop in yes, THE VILLAGE!! Another "local" doing business in the Village. Also, pretty solid talk that Shogun is leaving Mammoth for good, the owner of the mall jacked the rent, he is going to Bishop, but not to open a secong spot, I just sushi in the village next to the deli will be "the" spot!"

    so fucking upset about this

The guys I race with who've been a few times said they always rode the shuttles to go out at night and such, so I'm guessing they're running for the National race, but I'll double check to be sure.

Thanks guys! Made a reservation at the Holiday Haus. I can deal with ghetto (considering the original plan was to sleep on someone's floor), just couldn't stomach $175 a night.
