midwest mini?

Yes, I know the midwest is very mini...

All this talk about summits that I can't attend is making me jealous... Any midwest mags be down for a weekend or something at Bohemia or elsewhere? I know theres some from the Minneapolis, Madison, and Chicago areas here, so speak up dammit.

Anyone actually skied at Bohemia? When is the snow the best?

I'd do something in lower MI. Bohemia would be too far for me to drive in a weekend.

I'm in for a weekend in the LP, coming from Indiana, Bohemia is about 12 hrs for me, it's a great place, but a hell of a drive for only a couple of days.

If I'm around, meaning not in yurp or ootah, I'll try to make a midwest mini.

Bohiema's too far, I can be out west in 1/2 the time. But possibly something in Lower MI or WI. The midwest kind of sucks for skiing, but there are some things that its pretty good for.
I would be more up for a Mt. Bike ride. Or there is still plenty of good water for the next couple of weeks if anyone is into waterskiing or wakeboarding.

Skiing wise, a mini summit in the LP of Michigan would be cool. The skiing sucks, but meeting some fellow maggots for beers and turns would be cool.

I skied bohemia last year for about two weeks. I would say the slopes are okay but for what they lack in vertical they make up in powder. However, the weather is kind of weird up there. It will either snow everyday for about a month. Or be completely dry for a month. So if I were you I'd just check to see when it start's snowing for 3-4 days straight or so and then head on up.

On a side note, when I was there last year they let you winter camp for free. So bring a tent and a thermal sleeping bag and you'll be set. You can actually camp right next to the warming house so it isn't that bad. In the warming house they have a stove, microwave, toaster-oven, TV, DVD player and a few couches. So if you are looking to get by cheap - you can just spend your time at night relaxing in there and hit the tent in the late evening.

Also, if you check there website around the beginning of December they usually have season passes on sale for $99 if you call a special number on a certain day. You can then pick-up the pass at Mt. Ripley (in Houghton) on your way up.

I would join you guys/gals but I finally made it out to CO and don't really want to look back ;-)

I'b be up for a mini-summit. I vote for Bohemia or even Lutsen, but if Southern WI is an preferred I'd be up for that as well. I had a season pass a Mt. La Crosse for several years but as far as showing everyone a secret stash I could just point from the base. In other words there aren't any. But they do have one hell of a slopeside bar.

This has what's kept me from going up there before. Either 8 hours up there or 12 to Slummit County. Like I said, I was just checking for interest because most likely I will be up there at some point this winter...

mid jan to mid march is best for bohemia. the base is always gonna be sketchy is spotty since they dont have snowmaking.

I was able to make it up about twice a week last year and had some awesome days up there.

I usually end up having to work instructing on weekends but I'm sure I could get a weekend off if i knew far enough ahead.

The only thing is... Bohemia is about 8 hrs away and if I added 4hrs to that I could be in Summit County.... Sounds tempting doesn't it!

But I'd be up for Bohemia anyway just to meet some magots. Fuck lutsen, and this lower wisconsin/MI shit though... Those places would be a waste of time. And even though Lutsen has a lot of vert for a MW ski area its pretty flat and has no park. Its one of those places you ski in april just to ski because no one else is open.

For those who are concerned with the "too far for me" factor the Mt. Bulemia brings, Searchmont might be a good location. It's about 2 hrs. north of the Mackinac bridge. It's in Ontario, so keep that in mind. It's pretty cool though. It's in the Laurentian Mountains (and yes they are actually mountains, little ones anyway) and there is a lot of public land i.e. backcountry opportunity. I was an instructor there last year (I go to school in Sault Ste. Marie MI, which is just across the border) and it's a hell of a lot better than LP molehills. I could also supply limited lodging.

My grandparents used to live in the Soo, so I was up there many times as a kid.

I'd be up for a searchmont mini. The soo ain't bad the snow is fairly predictable and it is much more accessable than bohemia.

The too far bellyachin' really isn't the issue since I would drive the 17 hrs to colorado for 3 days of skiing when I have the chance, it's really the 10 hrs that it would take to ski at bohemia. I've skied there and it's just not worth the drive.

good call on searchmont, however is there really any "good" skiing in the midwest?

I'd be down for a Searchmont summit but I would like to throw Blue Mountain into the hat. More reasonable drive for people in the LP. However if anyone could get a sled in Searchmont there would be KILLER ob havings.

I know i've had some OB at Searchmont.
