    Here's my email:

    Dear Sirs,

I would like to take a few moments to give my take on the current ORV proposal. I can understand the concern and the reasoning behind the proposal. My one comment though is that most people do not buy and opperate ORV's just to drive on roads. In my experience the challenge of conquering rough ground is one of the key draws to ORV's. The notion that "cross country" trips, or trips off of graveled roads, would be illegal defeats the purpose of allowing the ORV's into the forests.

I would propose that the money and effort be used to hire more rangers or allow them to patrol the forests more regularly. I would suggest fines be handed out to those who refuse to "tread lightly" when off the beaten path. Winching from trees w/out adequate protection for the bark, or purposefully rutting a trail would be examples of activities that should result in citation. I do not think the solution is to close the forests all together. I believe that there is a position that may appease all users of our wonderful forests.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

The comment period was extended to November 14th. In a cleaver twist on the "extended by popular demand" promotion, the Bush Administration decided they didn't want to scrap an very popular rule two weeks before the election and gave the public 60 more days to tell them what they think of the Roadless Rule--who cares if they were all over the press in mid-July touting that they could give a rat's ass about the public's comments.

Look for all kinds of absurd logging and mining projects to be approved in the post election period.

Well, that might solve a lot of problems, but unlikely to happen under this administration or any other.
