    Question Tough Decision

Well, as some of you know, I have been a little unhappy in my current job and I have been talking to a few other people. I have been thinking I would def stay in Cali, as Mrs Chair will not leave. I was in beginning negotiation on a Bay Area thing that might still materialize.

    However,

I have been offered a job in Manhattan that would pay me far more than I've ever made. It would give me a "signing bonus" bigger than some folk's annual salaries and a very real opportunity to become what I would consider "very well off". It would require at least a 2-3 year commitment and could very well earn the dough I would need to set myself up in my own little business in a few years. Mrs Chair can be convinced to move to Manhattan.

I have been feeling more and more like I want to spend more time in the mountains and become less tethered to a time-consuming, yet financially rewarding job in the Big City. Then this comes along. It just feels like one of those once in a lifetime opportunities.

I have lived in the Northeast, so I know what kind of skiing is (or rather isn't) there. I would probably have to do several trips a year to maintain sanity, but my 50 day seasons would certainly cease.

    Any advice?

    Wink

Ever tried the SEARCH function? God, we've gone over this a million times!

Just kidding. I don't know the answer to this one, but in the past it seems that maggots have for the most part taken the job and moved back to the mountains A.S.A.P.

edit- "very well off" does that mean "I can afford a pair of new Igneous well off?"

Sounds like you just need to do it. You'll be making enough money to take trips to killer locations and can move back to the mountains in 3-5 years. I guess it just depends on what you need in life at this time but I'd do it. Get in, make bank, get out.

    Just my perspective.

My initial opinion is don't do it. We've talked a bit about these topics, and I don't see how this gets you any closer to the dream. Also I worry about Mrs. Chair being out of SoCal.

On the other hand, what the hell do I know?

I say do it. If it will really take you closer to your dream I dont see how you can go wrong. Its only 2-3 years which is not necessarily a huge commitment. But like Ice said I dont know anything

What do you want? In the end thats all that matters.

Is it a, "I think I'll just fly to Utah this weekend...maybe pull a long weekend." Kinda deal? Or is it a 'work for 3 years and be set for a good while to get somthing else going' kinda deal?
    No.

I guess you would have to weigh short term and long term goals with Mrs. Chair. If it was really enough cash to be "set" after 3 years then that might be cool. Also would depend if it was near a major hub type airport. Then fly to Utah (probably the easiest and cheapest airport to fly into for 2 day ski trips) every other week end.

I suggest the "Ben Franklin" balance sheet technique for honestly weighing the pros and cons of the move. Whichever column ends up with more; bingo, decision made. My wife and I have used it for important decisions many times in 25 years.

He did say the job was in Manhattan--pretty sure there's an airport (or three) nearby.
I recuse myself from offering an opinion due to a conflict of interest (my own interest in having someone else to drive to VT with, vs. ACE's best interest).

    Tim, Tim, you're not thinking....

Fly to Utah for every other Tuesday, Wednesday or if enough freedom is granted every other powder day.

If this is one step in making a dream come true, I say go for it. It may take you away from the mountains for a while but they will lure you back. Just think, with the extra coin you'll make you could make a trip or two to europe.

The advantage to this is the choice that you know in your heart is the correct one always ends up with more entries

I'd say you should go for it. If you hate it you can always move back.

If the only consideration was your satisfaction with the location, I'd say set the financial foundation first ...then build the rest of it like you want it to happen. Its only temporary. However, since your wife's happiness could be at stake in a move, she's got 50% of the input...listen carefully and choose wisely.

Either way its a win/win situation. Big bucks or 50-days on the hill.

will this get you where YOU want to be in a few years.

for your line of work Manhattan is one of the bright shining areas but that brings high exprctations/high stress/ high everything.

gotta be a hard one. let me ponder & consult the Yoda

My advice? Don't take the manhattan job. I worked in NYC for 1.5 yrs and it was a living hell. Plus it's so expensive around here that you may find you can't actually save up the way you thought you could.

It's also rather difficult to get to good mtns from this area due to incredible traffic and long travel distances. And with a high-powered job you might find that time off is a little hard to maneuver (even though it's offered). I don't mean to be a bummer...just giving my honest 2 centavos. I hope whatever you decides works out well for you!

ACE.. the tone of your post sounds more excited about this possibility than apprehensive. i'm guessing you'd like to give this a shot but are, understandably, a little concerned about what might happen if you make a bad decision. i say go with your gut and be sure you don't make a decision that'll leave you in "what if" mode for years to come.
if it were me... i'd be looking for ways to justify going. but, i like change more than most and am fairly stupid.

I vote to stay in Cali ( north or south ), but then I equate quality of life with my access to outdoor beauty not money so it's obvious what my prejudices are.

go to new york and muck around for a while before you decide. in my opinion, that place can chew up people and spit them out like nowhere else. there are most likely some good reasons why the job pays so well, and kindess/charity probably aren't among them.

as the saying goes, you've got to break some eggs to make an omlette. and an omlette can be mighty tasty...

    Thumbs up

Do it. Contrary to popular belief, NYC only sucks the life blood out of you if you let it. For your purposes it sounds like it couldn't be scripted any better.
