    Local Stunts

When I was an undergrad, some friends and I came across a hidden mecca of stunts and jumps. This was a good 4-5 years ago, and most of the stuff was brand new.

Cut to last year about this time, I just started grad school and I thought I'd check it out. To my chagrin, the stunts were falling apart and much of the woodwork had been vandalized. I was slightly annoyed by this, but forgot about it soon after. Then, last friday, a professor of mine heard that I raced DH and mentioned some stunts behind his house that his son had been building. He was talking about the same trails I'd once ridden.

Apparently the orginal builders, with the help of some younger kids, went in and have been working hard to rejuvenate the place. There are skinnies, drops, berms, step-ups/downs, hips and dirt jumps. Many of the lines are super burly and beyond my ability, but there are quite a few lines that I see myself progressing on. I managed to work up the courage (with the help of 2 sixteen year olds no less) to hit by far the biggest gapper I've ever done. One thing I didn't do was an elevated ramp that leads to a 7-8' drop to tranny. The thing is rickety at best and peaks at about 12' feet. I'm not bothered by the drop so much as the height. After pussing out on this thing yesterday, I spent the rest of the day dwelling on this damn stunt. I've decided that I must do it before the season is over. The pics of the stunt are included, and hopefull I'll get some more in the next few weeks.

Damn man, that thing looks like it'll fall over in a light breeze. Looks fun though. What's the tranny like?

Heh. Funny you said that. The trees sway in the breeze, so the whole thing moves back and forth.

The tranny is fine, and the lz is wide open, I just have problems getting out on the thing. The slats are far enough apart that the ride is a bit rough too. However, I watched a 16 y/o do it yesterday, so I've got no room for excuses.

Looks fun to me...if it starts to sway in the breeze and you have to make an early exit, all that much more adventurous!

I'm not sure that a 16 y/o being willing to do it is a great argument for doing something.

Yeah it looks a little rickety, I don't know about hitting it. But it does look like a lot of fun. Well good luck growing big ones to hit that jump. Too bad I aint stuck in Motigley, I would have to help push our abilities on the stunts. Nice pics though.

That thing does not look safe at all. I would be willing to bet it falls apart within a year.

I don't know about that. We have a local park that has been expanding every year and quite a few of the stunts are attached to live trees. Some of the bridges are 150 feet long and 7-8 feet off the ground. They actually seem to hold up quite well. The longest is over 250 feet and has a 3 and a 5 drop in the middle, it goes over a rock and ends in a 6 footer with a banked turn below it. The 18 footer into a double with a 12 foot gap and a stupid steep tranny is a bit sketch but there are a few freaks here that clean it regularly. Good stuff...

    I love that first pic.!!!!!

Even the Ewoks wouldn't risk using that thing.

It would make for some great photo ops.
I want a 6" travel 20lb MTB. I found the 20lb MTB, but only good for riders under 87 pounds.

Nope. There's one in Brewster that you're not supposed to know about. There are at least 25 different stunts now spread out over two mountains. There are at least 12 miles of trails connecting the goodies. The greatest thing about the place is how many people just drive by it and have no idea it's there. Come to one of my thursday night group rides and we'll go check it out.
