These old walkie talkies have to go and some new two way radios need to be trusted in their place.

What kind of radios do you use in the backcountry?

Do i need the GMRS? or is everything line of site and it doesn't matter either way. Radios claim to have ~30 mile ranges but is that only with GMRS and "plains" terrain? When it comes down to it I just want a reliable radio go get people out when sh*t hits the fan, but so far I can not find any information about this function and if it is the crux to good communication.

if you wanted to be really serious you could get a couple of digital BK's and run on wildland fire freqs that aren't being used in the winter.
