Silverton skis the first snows of 04/05

The season's first dumps on the San Juans allowed for a few snow freaks to get the first turns of the year:

Hope you're going to go get some of the best wild snow in the world there this year too.

I was just talking to Jenn last weekend at DMR during the races. We both said we were ready to ski but it looks like she got me by about 2 months. Nice job!

I'm a little left leg dominant, so I ski with the 155cm on the right and the 223cm on the left...

    Snow attracts skiers above Silverton

    By Melissa Trujillo
    Associated Press Writer

DENVER – Some skiers and snowboarders at Silverton Mountain took advantage of an early snowstorm Saturday, but the snow forced mountain bikers to wait in the parking lot for the powder to melt.

Silverton Mountain owner Aaron Brill said fewer than 10 people hit the slopes for the first skiing in Colorado this season.

Snow fell all day, and Brill estimated the base, at 10,400 feet, got about a foot, while higher elevations got more than 16 inches.

"We got a parking lot full of guys ready to go mountain biking. They were just waiting, and a couple of skiers showed up and went skiing," Brill said.

The skiers and snowboarders paid $15 – the cost of a scenic lift ride. Silverton Mountain offers guided skiing for 80 people a day from its single chairlift.

"They’re saying it’s great to be skiing but they’re looking forward to winter, because it’s not quite here," he said.

The National Weather Service issued a snow advisory for the northern and central mountains in western Colorado for Saturday through sunrise today, said Brian Avery, a hydrologist for the National Weather Service in Grand Junction.

He said most snow was above 8,500 feet, with the heaviest above 9,500 feet. He expected higher elevations to get between 2-4 inches more.

"Our biggest concerns are there are a number of people out and about for the Labor Day weekend who aren’t prepared for the winter-like weather," he said.

Avery expected cold temperatures in western Colorado until after today, when a slow warming trend would bring normal temperatures by midweek.

Frank Benton, a National Weather Service specialist, said between 2-4 inches of snow was expected above 10,000 feet in the central and northern mountains of northern Colorado by late this morning.

He said there was a good possibility Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park would be closed because of snow.

The road is the nation’s highest continuous paved highway and reaches 12,000 feet above sea level. It was closed about a week ago because of ice and 2`BD-foot snow drifts.

hopefully its a sign of things to come.

Mind you even in Fernie, BC the mountain tops got a dusting and the snow stayed for 3 days counting.

Little Bro called to rub my nose in it, with the news this AM, said he also heard 10-12" on the top of Wolf Creek and some decent snowfall on the La Plata's.

    Heh.

I predict a huge season for SW Colorado, as I have moved away.
