I checked the Caltrans website and it says the pass is still closed to Mammoth but I thought I read the recent Mammoth TR and people from the Bay Area used it? Any input from the locals if this is open or not?

The pass was clear but closed as of sunday. Not sure when it will open.
But you can drive from 395 all the way up to the upper gate for skiing access, that's probably what you read.

We got there from the east side. We did not get to Mammoth through the park, unfortunately.

^ Yeah, I sort of just realized that the good access is from 395, not this side - kind of makes it out of reach for a one-day-er... maybe KW, or maybe a local mtn. bike ride instead for me...
