Here's an article published not long ago in Paddler Mag about the Moore Run, WV adventure that happened a while back. It's an interesting read, and there's a lot to take away from it. Glad I wasn't on that one.

I am friends with the folks involved in that debacle. Luckily everyone is healthy these days. It was definitely a scary experience for those involved and a concrete reminder of why the buddy system is important in any backcountry pursuit, even for people with strong skills. There's lots to learn from this incident about group dynamics, trip planning, and contingency planning.
Or you can turn on the flame thrower like they did on BT.
It's always great to learn from others, and even better when they ended up with a positive outcome. This is a great read that could apply just as easily to a backcountry ski trip. Thanks for posting, and thank jah or whoever that all came out of it ok...
Something about the wrinkle in your forehead tells me there's a fit about to get thrown
And I never hear a single word you say when you tell me not to have my fun
It's the same old shit that I ain't gonna take off anyone.
and I never had a shortage of people tryin' to warn me about the dangers I pose to myself.

I'm still peeved over the fallout from that one. NOT smart.
Agreed, there are some GREAT lessons to be learned from that debacle, the previous debacle, and the debacle before that, and...![]()
No doubt. I was on the first Moore Run trip which ended with a hike out in the dark, and learned a lot from that experience. Apparently it took a second time for some of them to figure these things out. I'm just glad the second trip didn't turn out any worse than it did...it makes for a good story at the very least.
I did conveniently forget the fallout you speak of Nly. Yeah, the S&R bashing wasn't cool. Just goes to show the differences in mindset between the DC metro and WVa.
These days, paddling around Idaho, I don't even consider S&R an option.
What is S&R?
