just picked up a garmin vista from officemax for $169 I'm using the us photomaps app that summit posted and its great but I'd love to have some way to put contour lines on the handheld or is the resolution simply not worth the exorbatent price($116) of Garmins TOPO USA?

How do you score a Vista for $169? You should find the maps cheaper online and for free if it can be downloaded.
If you have a problem & think that someone else is going to solve it for you then you have two problems.

some web monkey I think put the wrong price up its at www.officemax.com but thats all they charged my card for

Cool. They only ship within the USofA
so maybe I'll drive down to Bellingham and check it out. Think the store will match their Web site?
