    Red face ACL

Man I don't how some of you stayed so positive during your ACL downtime.....

saw the ortho today and he thinks my ACL is either completely or partially torn (his assistant resident said complete....senior dude said "maybe", but "hopefully only partially or sprained". Have an MRI scheduled which only then will I know if my season is shot or merely delayed a little.

Went out on the bike this evening, thinking it would do me good, but as I pedaled, the realization that my season might not start for another year began to hit. I don't even know for sure yet, but that reality just got a little closer today and just the thought of it is sluggingn me in the gut full force. This sucks.

Shit, shit. That's what I was worried about when you first described what happened.
Does it feel unstable at all? Still swelling?
I would ask them to scope the knee first, assuming they say the ACL is gone. Even after an MRI, the first time I injured my knee, they had it wrong and thought my ACL was blown. It was only thanks to a last minute physical exam and my doc's suspicion that it was just a bit too tight that they didn't unnecessarily cut out part of my patellar tendon. It's probably less than a 1/1000, but still could be worth it.
Good luck, though. Hope you don't need this advice.
(BTW, I didn't stay positive, was fucking pissed all the time...)

I know what you mean. I was diagnosed with a torn MCL today and had an MRI done immediately (I got lucky that they had an opening in the schedule). Won't know about the rest of the knee until Tuesday. Needless to say, no DH race (or any riding) for me this weekend; I just get to sit around and worry about the outcome on Tuesday. If I just have a bad MCL, I'll get it stronger by the time the snow flies. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Positive vibes mang. Best of luck to ya. Good to know that they're taking an MRI - somehow a doc thought I blew my ACL on a bike before last winter and it turned out to be a slightly strained MCL. Don't ask me how it happened.

Get a second opinion, and best of luck to ya! Stay strong and positive - remember, positivity helps rebuild tendons.

The knee brace really does make it feel more stable. My 'bad' knee feels better than my 'good knee', brace or no brace though. Keep yo head up yo. If anything else, milk the crutches, they are great conversation starters. But think of it this way... its only 1 ligament at least. If you get it done asap, you might get some turns at the end of the season. Or you could wait til next spring, and go with the good brace like Alka suggested. Then you wouldn't have to worry about tearing it anymore.

you don't need no stinkin' acl

    Hey Tyrone,

If it means anything…I was diagnosed 6 years ago with a 75% torn ACL and I have about 10mm of slop in that knee. At the time I didn’t have health insurance so I didn’t get the surgery.

Now that I do have coverage, I still cant afford to take the time off work for 3 weeks and have someone drive me to work for another 4-6 weeks after so I’ve continued to put it off. I’m hoping for next summer maybe.

The thing I’ve learned is that you can still get out there and have a DAMN good time. I just try to keep that leg really strong with a stationary bike, wear a brace while riding, and try to pick my lines wisely.

    No more of this…

    But this is still ok…

I also spend 99% of my time in the bc which means I get less turns on it per day so maybe that has contributed to me getting by without the acl this long.

Good luck and positive vibrations coming your way!

    Chris

major bummer dude, positive vibes at you.

At least you will know in a few days time. Once you know then you ahve a goal, a mission. Don't be distracted, make it ai setrious component in your life to get through it since it has a serious impact. I know that you can get through this once you have identified what has to be overcome.

It does suck but is not the end of the world, just somehting that will make you appreciate this wonderful thing we all love to do that muh more.

    Big motivation your way.

Damn, that's a major blow to the early season stoke. A season without Shoe? We can't let that happen.

Best wishes for the sprain. It'll be better with a month or two of rest.

fuck. that sucks tyrone. i'm going to offer a little unsolicited advice. take it or leave it. This route definitely saved my ass IMHO:

I chose to scrap the entire season on the doc's advice and get the surgery immediately. unless i wanted to ski groomers all season at 70% intensity, as in cheeseball boring turns, i could've torn more material, especially jumping, (very) effectively increasing arthritis chances when i'm in my 30's to 40's. so said the doc. yours may say different.
best choice i ever made. My knee's 100 por ciento now, has been rock solid for 6-7 years and i ski much more demandingly now than when i was 21. consider it.

thoughts out to you. stay positive. that really does work. do anything to.

oh, and the bill's a bitch. I'm sure you know this but lots don't seem to realize the doc's time isn't the expensive part. that's the wacked part of the whole ACL nightmare: [B] it's the time in the hospital and admin bullshit.[B] 1, Do NOT stay overnight, unless you're advised to the contrary, and strongly. 2, refuse any admin. support/processes you deem to be convenience or comfort candy. like overnight's. ain't no medicine or physical service there. just a bed and maybe an IV. to know which shit to refuse, ask to see an estimate of the costs, presurgery, and plan which are frivolous IYHO. That is your right, an estimate! you wouldn't do major "surgery" on your car, if a mechanic refused to give you an estimate, right? consult the doc on frivolities, what's best. all that overnight shit, and admin. crap: that's when they fuck you.

oh, and bcrider, seems like an awful long time all those estimates for time off work, etc. i was walking the day after surgery, no joke. I walked myself out of the hospital on a buddy's shoulder at doc's advice. no crutches. cadaver ACL. As long as your body doesn't reject the cadaver ACL, (don't know stats on this occuring. Google? Doc?), you'll be able to work in just 3-4 days to a week depending upon what you do for work. cadaver grosses some folks out but, it's the best way to keep the muscle mass you've got and not have to build it all up again after sitting on your ass for 2-3 weeks at home, which is what harvesting lig's from your body will do to you. it's not that that's bad, it's that the down time takes a bigger toll on you. oh, and with cadaver route, be conservative once you're strong again. Muscle recovery's faster than the time your surgery needs to "set", (6+ months). that's key.

sorry bout the length. important shit.

Good point about the $$$. I mentioned it in another thread and it is EXPENSIVE!!! $130 warming blankets ect... I did stay over night for my first 2 surgeries though. Was in too much pain, but I had more than just an ACL. I will say that I did walk 20 minutes after waking up from surgery # 3 though as that was just arthroscopy. Good luck what ever you choose, and heal quick.
