Lewis Samuels is pretentious and self-indulgent, but if you follow the WCT at all he's worth reading. I guess he got into a spat with Sean Collins or someone at Surfline so he's rolling solo now and freelancing the Power Rankings on his own site. Now with extra vitriol and corporate conspiracy theories:

I've known Lewis since he was 10. He was a chump back then too, but I do love his musings on the industry. It does take balls to call out your employer on their own website though.

Someone should definitely do a skiing version of the power rankings.

Edit: Although he is often referring to postsurf not paying the bills now that he's no longer w/ Surfline, don't send the bailout checks just yet. LS has a day job and he's doing juuuust fine.

Thank sweet buheybee Jeebus for my brief Wifi connection. Mr. Lewis, this war is only just beginning. Allow me to elaborate:

Thinking, for lack of a better term, is hard. This is why most Americans vote for the guy they want to have a beer with, as well as why the most popular TV show in the universe is about watching someone else’s fame.

Surfline, along with the majority of current ‘surfing journalists,’ are just another symptom of a cultural blight that refreshes the soul without nourishing it; echoing society without contributing to it. Ed Hardy, trucker hats, energy drinks, LOST, Enzyte - they’re all different peanuts in the same turd that distracts us from solving our own problems and discovering our own discoveries. They are the woof and warp of a continental AIDS quilt of intellectual sloth. The average American may not “like” to be told what to do or think or eat or laugh at, but they are absolutely content to do so. It’s lemming think. You don’t eat at McDonald’s because you like it - you eat it because hundreds of millions of your closest friends have vetted it for you. This is why Dane Cook is a star. This is why Gray’s Anatomy is still on the air. This is why the makers of ShamWOW! are millionaires and the makers of “towel” are not.

Compared to Jim Cramer or Larry the Cable Guy or creationism, Surfline doesn’t even rank as one of the top one hundred oozing lesions of this particular social malady. But ironically, they’ve become an easy target in our small community.

Oh, and they suck mollusk wieners too. (I throw that in there for all the budding insult artists who’ve migrated here by mistake.)
