He sounded surprisingly calm for a guy who'd just snapped his leg in half.Originally posted by lax

One thing just changed my mind from "no way I'm gonna buy this flick" to "maybe it's actually well done"--The acknowledgement of Kreitler's ego and rather "forward" personality. Before I thought that this was a rather premature retrospective on an athlete that's not even done with his career--perhaps the most egotistical move he could pull. But with the acknowledgement of his not-so-rad-side, I think it might actually be a legit look at the life of one of the best freeskiers of our generation! Props to JK.

no speakers at work, but fuckin burls dude. I threw up in my mouth a little bit during the helmet cam section where he ruined his leg.
edit: watching him straightline tram chute at Sqauw was coool.

Wow, that looks really good. Thanks for posting, Karma, I'd wondered about the vid myself (saw it in an online store ad in Powder). I know he has a reputation of being a rich-kid trustafarian with a hellacious ego, and I wondered if he'd bankrolled the video himself, but I'll admit I've always liked his skiing and style for sure. I would like to say that he's been one of my influences in the sport, some day I hope I'm half as good.
If I had to rank skiers today, in terms of what they do for the freeskiing movement, it'd be
1) Seth
2) Kent
3) Shane
4) Sage (just because he's new to this side)
but that's me.
anyway, video looks great, I'll definitely buy.
I think your talking about the Chimney Sweep off the Palisades.Originally posted by vinzclortho

Anyways, that vid looks frickin sick. Kent is how they describe him, but the biggest thing I remember about the guy was when I was 17, two off my best friends went off the backside of squaw on a storm day and both perished in an avalanche. But before S&R found them, Kent was on his own, lapping the backside by himself searching for MY friends. I would drive to the bottom of alpine road, pick him up, drive him back to KT and he would go search again. I'll I remember him saying was, "I know that area better than anyother person at this mountain. I'll find those guys." So there he was searching by himself, all day long, for two 17 year old kids he's never met in his life. Putting his neck on the line searching for my friends. And then the next day when I went skiing to get my mind off the fact that two of my best friends had just died, he bought me lunch and cruised around Squaw with me all afternoon. And that was the first time I ever met Kent Krietler. The guy is a hero to me in skiing and a role model to me for many of his actions outside of skiing.

thats admirable for sure. never understood the ego claim on K. He was supa cool the few times I had interactions with him.
funny that list Jumper put up has not changed in 7 years, aside from the addition of Sage.
remember reading about those three in Powder when I was living in Basalt, in 96-97.
I hear what you're saying. In my relatively limited time spent with Kent here (shot a TV show with him and he lives in this area for part of the year some years) I'd say that "egotistical" is not the right word. I've never had a conversation with the guy where he talked about how rad or great or sweet he was as a skier nor a person. But he does like to talk about himself, his views, his spirituality (he's no wannabe/poseur...the dude is devout and legit in his beliefs) and his experiences and is also not afraid to put other not-so-well-rounded skiers in their place. Egotistical? No. Self involved? Just a little bit.Originally posted by Woodsy

remember reading about those three in Powder when I was living in Basalt, in 96-97.But overall he really is a pleasant and sharp guy who'll buy you a drink or say hi to you on the street without a second thought. And make no mistake...they guy is built like a friggin' wall.

I think it's a requirement for people to have an attitude to ski like Kent, or else he wouldn't have anything to prove. I also think acting like you have no ego, and playing Mr. Humble is all that cool either. All world class atheletes have egos, get over it. Just trying to be something your not is nothing cool. Props to Kent for keeping it real, and to Alka showing that when it matters the guy is hanging it out to find his friends.....that's a real act of class.
Prolly a good point, though some folks don't seem to have the 'tude. But "some folks" ain't Kreitler, either!Originally posted by BlurredElevens
