    Euro Skiing?

I had asked about skiing in Bulgaria earlier in the week, that idea has been axed mostly because of Bad_roo's lovely description of the place, and because I now believe that better skiing can be had while I'm in Europe.

Right now it looks like I will be flying into Belgrade, Serbia Montenegro to visit family. We will be gone for 2 weeks in the middle of January.

We will spend some time in Italy, Slovenia, and maybe some time in Austria.

From what I can tell In Slovenia, the areas of Vogel and Krajnska Gora will be the areas to go.

I have looked at some Italian sites, and the amount of terrain is amazing, so where's a maggott to ski? So my question of any across the pond maggots is which areas of the dolomites are must ski?

    Thanks,

I plan on it. It's looking like I will get to do a hell of a lot of skiing this winter for being stuck living in Indiana.

Season pass to a Michigan hill (for racing)

2 Week trip to europe skiing places I never imagined. January.

10 day trip to Utah & Colorado in February.

God, this season can't get here fast enough.

Oh yeah and before winter, Labor Day camping in Michigan, a weekend trip to Florida (september), a Mountain bike trip to Montana (october).

The next 6 months are gonna be fun.

Didn't ski in Italy while I lived across the pond so take this with a shaker of salt, but my research (and there was a lot as any obsessed maggot would do) basically came up with there is tons of terrain in Italy, the food is amazing, and its gourgeous (especially the Dolomites).

The catch is the snow. So it depends on the weather patterns. Basically from what I figured out there are three typical patterns that effect the Alps. Storms from the south, west, and north. Now Italy only scores from one of those directions and there is a reason the weather in the south of Europe is usually on the drier/warmer side. The nasty weather comes from the west and north. I'm a huge proponent of the snow worthiness of a number of Austrian places, especially St. Anton. They get the goods from both west and north. (north storms, think crappy German rain = snow).

Now if you go to Italy, the place I would suggest, as I'm sure Ulty would agree, is the Monterossa including Alagna, Gressoney, etc.

You will have a blast in any of the areas because they are all huge, and the ski culture is so different and fun in Europe. Look for high elevation because that gives you much better probabilities of snow versus the r word.

Forget everthing else in Slovenia and go to Bovec....
THE untouched Freeride Gem in Europe.
When it has snow it should be really good.
i will try to go there this year when low pressure systmes from northern italy hit the southeastern alps and dump on bovec.
last year they had a 5m base !
It's a war of the mind and we're armed to the teeth.

Thanks Comish, what is the best way to get around?

My dad is thinking about purchasing a car while in europe, to keep with family in Yugoslavia, and then use when he and my mom return for a 6 month euro tour later in the year.

Would car travel through Slovenia and into Italy be too much of a PITA?

sutle plague, where is Bovec? Do you have a link to a site that is in english, or at least has a lot of good pictures. I've been doing by research and can't find much on Bovec. Sounds sweet.

    Thanks,

If you want flexibility to change resorts or move around a lot a car is very very nice. Depending on the region, practically required. for example I don't think you can get to Alagna without a car. Actually most of the Italian alps require a car so if you can score one you will be psyched. This way if you find yourself on the Italian side with no snow a few hours drive can land you in CH or Austria where there is a good probability of completely different conditions.
