I'm pretty picky about Asian food, and I'm reluctant to send anyone to any of the Chinese in DC. Every Chinese meal I've had in the district has been something of a disappointment. You really have to go out to the suburbs for the good stuff.

I'd pick Matchbox if in Chinatown area, or maybe walk over to Penn Quarter for lunch at Teaism, for something a bit different.

My point wasn't that it's the best in DC, but the best w/in walking distance of the Convention Center.

Peking Gourmet Inn in Bailey's X-Roads has the best Peking Duck I've ever had, including NYC.

Close. Oriental East is better than anything downtown, but when you're visiting that area, I recommend that you head to Wheaton to eat at Holywood East for great Cantonese-style food (that said, I haven't been to their new location in the shopping mall yet - hopefully it's as good as it always was).

Mrs. Rontele has grudingly consented to the possibility of meeting up for drinks while we are there. She holds you mouthbreathers in real high esteem.

Its looking like Saturday night, the 20th would be the night to meet for drinks. Still figuring out where we are going to stay. Fairmont isn't offering the friends and family discount for this period this year. Right now, I've booked the St. Regis (got a decent rate through Amex) and looking at the Sofitel and the W (though Ws suck).

There's a lot of pages here and I forget: Do you need to be right down by the convention center? If not, how far away would you consider?

Unfortunately I will be en route back from UT most of the 20th, I'm going out for President's day with the family and staying on when they go home. So even if I got home early enough I doubt I can just turn around and go out that night if I want to stay married. Next time.

You are getting your months mixed up, old man. March 20th.

Proximity to the Convention Center is necessary.

Oh, I just looked at the calendar and saw that Feb. 20 is a saurday and figured that was the one. March 20 I believe I can do.

I'll have to think about the hotel, nothing jumps to mind that I didn't see mentioned.

All right all you DC experts. I'm on extended TDY in Dulles for the next 2-3 months. Besides making it to DC every chance I get, what should I do while I'm here? Anything worthwhile to see/eat/do in my more immediate proximity?

BTW, it sucks to have snow everywhere and nothing to ski down.

Actually, if we get this big dump over the weekend, the local skiing should be decent. Whitetail is supposed to be okay, but from Dulles I would just head out to WV. When the weather is holding up like this, the skiing can probably be compared to most of the lesser places in New England without laughing, not that that's high praise.

The local mountain biking club's night rides in Wakefield Park in Annandale are pretty good and are right off the beltway in VA. It's a great group.

So are Ms. Shred and I invited to crash the iceman, tippster and rontele party on the 20th? We might be at Ray's in Cleveland that weekend because I'll be in Ohio on business, but I'm leaning toward returning to DC on Friday.

MachLooney - If you have skins go to Whitegrass in WV. Go Friday, camp or stay at hotel... have the place to yourself Sat. for storm skiing & Sunday when the sun comes out.

Sirshred - depends on the pix of said wife...

I can't believe my trip to Tahoe on Sunday may be delayed due to too much snow...

Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't figure to be skiing out here, let alone bring skins and such. This storm is going to make a hot tranny clusterfuck of the roads anyway.

We would have never been able to meet up. A four hour delay out of DIA made us miss our reservation at Brasserie Beck. We went to a late dinner at the Oval Room (pretty good) then hit the hay. Sunday was spent at the conference, lunch at Zaytinya, a nice stroll around Georgetown, a run around the Mall, dinner at Cafe Milano and then work until 2 a.m.

Monday was a lot of work and conferencing, another late night. We really liked the St. Regis and will likely stay there again next year. I really really love D.C.
