Blue Duck lived up to the hype, although I made the mistake of getting both the bone marrow and a ribeye (beef overload). The desserts were amazing.
The big shots took us out to Cafe Milano last night, which has proven to be the best meal thus far.
Can't ride legally in rock creek, and since its a national park, the fine is pretty big.
You can ride here within DC though: http://www.more-mtb.org/forum/showthread.php?t=5553
There are a bunch of options a short jog from DC, if you are interested in sneaking away for a few hours let me know and I'll see what I can do.
Etete on 9th and U St across from the 930 is where I send people who haven't had it before or I'm not going out to eat with.
If I'm eating down town I'll go to Zenebech Injera or Little Ethiopia. If I want late night drinks in the area I'll go to Dukem or Little Ethiopia.
Mostly though I hit the joints in Skyline Mall on George Mason Dr--Abay Market if you want meat and are adventurous--especially if you can order off menu or have been a few times and the owner recognizes you. Now I bring folks there and we don't even get offered menus. The places in Skyline get the vote in terms of atmosphere and authenticity, so it's fun to take people there. Its like Eden Center for Ethiopian folks.
Meaze on Columbia Pike is also good, especially if you go with Ethiopians or order off menu dishes or request certain things. I've gone and had a decidedly 'American' ethiopian meal and gone other times and have had something much more authentic.
Whoops. I came late to this thread. I actually did brunch at Matchbox in Chinatown yesterday and then hit up the National Gallery. A nice way to spend a rainy day with the lady friend. I would've bought you a beer had I known you were there also.
I'd offer to buy you a lunch time beer around Union Station tomorrow, but I'm still the new guy at the office, so I don't think that would fly.
Lelibella (or however the fuck you spell it) at 14th and P is pretty good Ethiopian as well, though I don't think that I'm the connoisseur that CantDog is, and that neighborhood (Dupont, Logan, U Street) is pretty fun if you haven't seen it yet.
You should have been there 5 years ago when the good chef was still there. It's a "See & be seen" type restaurant with our version of "stars" that has decent food for sure, but is not even in the top 5 Italian joints in DC.
Glad you had a good meal there, the last time I went it was too loud to talk to each other (4 of us,) the service sucked, and literally all the good less expensive wines seemed to have disappeared from the cellar shortly before we ordered, seeing people around us were drinking them.
Come back and play, but ask the Frau for permission to include your weirdo friends.
We should do a dc mag ethiopian dinner sometime.
I'll drink the Tej, since nobody else will.
Beer? I vote for Pizza Paradiso for that.
But someone was talking crabs earlier, which is a great local option too.
Bump. We are coming back again this March for the AIPAC Policy Conference (March 21-23) although I think we will fly in again on Friday and enjoy a day in D.C.
Staying at the Fairmont again and looking for restaurant rec'ds, etc. Perhaps I can carve out some time this go around for drinks with you crazies (but only if Tipp and Ice come).
I'll be there for 3 days next week visiting my vegetarian sister who has three very loud and active kids. As such, I'd like to get out of their house quite a bit (I think she is just over the boarder in Arlington), but am looking for much lower budget recommendations than Rontele. Think a nice place to grab a good sandwich, dog, beer, cheap ethnic, etc.
Hey Rontal - you fucking snubbed me last time and you expect me to forgive & forget?
Well, as long as you're buying...
Makers: PM me your available dates.
Thai X-Ing is good, reasonably priced ethnic food. It is just one guy, the owner, doing all the cooking in the basement of a rowhouse, so if you want to eat there, you need to call in advance.
If you want a break from vegetarianism and you are in Arlington, you need to go to Ray's Hellburger. If you are in the city, then BGR or Good Stuff provide reasonable Hell Burger alternatives, but Ray's is still the best.
Rontele, if you're at the convention center and are looking for a good lunch bite within an easy walk of the convention center, Taylor Gourmet makes a damn fine sandwich.
Figured something that size would have the food in house, but I figured I'd throw it out there.
More pricey options:
- Palena: one of the best restaurants in DC. It is located in Cleveland Park and yes, it's very much worth the cab ride from Foggy Bottom.
- Citronelle: Good, if expensive food and a place to be seen. Georgetown.
Moderately priced:
- Pizza Paradiso: Very decent pizza, but the attraction here is the unbelievable beer list this place has. Georgetown.
Reasonably priced:
- Ray's Hellburger: Guaranteed to be in the top 5 list best burgers you've ever had. Arlington/Rosslyn area.
- Moby Dick's: Very tasty and healthy Persian food - I'm hooked on this place. It's a local chain with various locations.
PS: Do not go to Ben's Chilli Bowl. It is a complete and utter waste of time.
In Arlington, for a good sandwich (and tater tots) and a killer beer list, check out Galaxy Hut, on Wilson Blvd. It's a quirky little place, and the beer's better than the food, but it's worth a stop.
I'd also add Churchkey, up near Logan Circle, to the discussion. The bratwurst burger is good, but the beer list is really impressive. I'd hit that on an afternoon, to avoid the crowd.
Isn't Corduroy around the CCntr? Tipp? And what, if anything, has replaced AV's?
I'd be likely found closer to the Sign of the Whale or Stoney's![]()
Something about the wrinkle in your forehead tells me there's a fit about to get thrown
And I never hear a single word you say when you tell me not to have my fun
It's the same old shit that I ain't gonna take off anyone.
and I never had a shortage of people tryin' to warn me about the dangers I pose to myself.
Patterson Hood of the DBT's
Matchbox or 5 Guys for Burgers - both on H St about 2 blocks from the Conv. Center. Matchbox has a real menu and booze too.
Full Kee at 6th & H in Chinatown for authentic Chinese.
Haad Thai on 12th & NY.
Sushi Aoi on 11th & K
Brasserie Beck at 10th & K for very yummy Belgian beer and food
Proof at 8th & G for a great wine bar.
