Every time we try to 'protect' beaches there will be an adverse effect. Erosion is nothing new - just don't build right on the coast or your homes and roads will some day fall in to the sea. Simple as that.

OTOH - these so called prized beaches are only prized when you view them through Floridian horse blinders. Come on.

surfs regularly on the beach, which is known as a center of competitive surfing where many champions have trained.
And I thought the epicenter of FL comp surfing was more toward Melbourne of Slater fame. Besides, FL champs are made precisely because the waves are so mediocre - they force you to really work the wave to get anything out of them...

erosion is something that will always happen no matter what you do.
all you can do is slow it down for a bit but it will always win out.
when one beach erodes another one down current is fortified by that sand which has just eroded.
yes breakwaters and re-sanding will slow down the inevitable but often are quite costly.
when it gets down to it you should always have a good buffer zone between your home and the ocean.
what is now your yard will one day be your beach.

Ottime-I'm trying to figure out what you mean by the Floridian horse blinders comment....plz explain. Are you bashing the land owners, the surfers or just Floridians as a group? Having spent many many days surfing and fishing the beaches of Florida I'd have to consider all of them prized, just like I prize Ocean Beach in San Fran, Pipe in Hawaii or Lennox in Australia... and I've never set foot on any of those.

Yes the epicenter of Fl surfing is further North but all of Brevard County heads to West Palm when the N swell passes by Cocoa Beach, Slaters and Hobgoods included. The reason the beach in West Palm is so prized that the city wants to save it is because of the Gazzillion $ mansions on the beach owned by the Kennedys and the Trumps. Some of the most exclusive and expensive real estate in the world.

I am referring to the to the comments in the article that imply these particular beaches are the cream de la cream of surfing beaches.

I am for preservation of all beaches, and prefer to see no engineering to 'protect' them. Erosion is a natural process.

That said - when referring to surfing locales, my list of top 100 spots would only include a handful of beaches, and none from FL. I've spent a good amount of time surfing in FL, and have always had fun. - but the locales do not make my list. Perhaps Sebastien would get an honorable mention. Reef Road could make the list if only it were a bit more consistent.

Perhaps I am an ass. Good for the local surfers in protecting their spot. And I am sure their set of breaks are prized - by them.

I also would not include Ocean Beach as a prized surfing location. It only gets good a handful of days a year. It is usually sloppy, dumpy, dirty and with horrible currents. Give me a solid, consistent, offshore reef break any day. Sure, I am a snob when it comes to surf - but that is how I define "prized". If every single break is "prized" then the word loses it value, IMHO.

All that said - let me be clear - I am glad these surfers won their case and saved their break. That is all.

    ^^^

Well, I wouldn't necessarily call you an ass, you just use a different ruler for measuring a surf spots worth. Everybody has the right to judge as they see fit. FL takes a lot of heat in surfing circles so I guess I'm a bit defensive about my home state.... In my mind any beach where a surfer plys their trade is a prize, whether the waves are world class or not. It's all good thou, I see where your coming from....

I grew up surfing in Cocoa Beach and if I was to judge on wave quality alone FL (and the majority of the EC) wouldn't be on my hot 100 either. Every dawg has their day, I've seen Monster Hole and Reef Road on a N Swell where, if you squint your eyes a bit, you could mistake it for Indo. But 360 out of 365 days is mostly meh.... FL has other redeeming factors going for it in my mind just because it's home. I've been lucky enough to expand my surfing outside of the EC and I've made some trips around norcal (never OB though-dunno why I chose that as a reference in my earlier post). You guys don't know how good you got it!
