    Thumbs up Goosebumps Hurt

Every now and then, I hear a song for the first time and everything seems to stop. Goosebumps pop up and you feel like the song was made for you in that moment, right there, especially 'cause you've never heard it before. Well I was shitfaced on Saturday evening after four hours of playing asshole with cheap champagne, surrounded by beautiful women and my friends on our sunny deck in the moutains. I walked inside for some reason (can't remember) and I just got this weird, lonely feeling where everything should feel better than perfect but there's just something missing. I tried to contemplate this feeling, but was a bit too cockeyed, me thinks. Just then, Johnny Cash's rendition of NIN's "Hurt" came on loud, on the house stereo. And everything in my drunken, sunny world just stopped. I called Cletus then and there with some sort of inspiration for a ski flick but in retrospect I think I was merely trying to reason with the moment.

    Cheers to Man in Black.

    "Hurt"
    Written by Trent Reznor
    Performed by Johnny Cash

    I hurt myself today
to see if I still feel
    I focus on the pain
    The only thing that's real
    the needle tears a hole
    the old familiar stain
try to kill it all away
    but I remember everything

    What have I become?
    My sweetest friend....
Everyone I know goes away in the end
And you could have it all
    My empire of dirt
    I will let you down
    I will make you hurt.

I wear this crown of thorns
    Upon my liar's chari
    Full of broken thoughts
    I cannot repair
    Beneath the stains of time
    The feelings disappear
    You are someone else
    I am still right here

    What have I become?
    My sweetest friend...
Everyone I know goes away in the end
And you could have it all
    My empire of dirt
    I will let you down
    I will make you hurt

    If I could start again
    A million miles away
    I would keep myself
    I would find a way

    Unhappy

Jesus, Slim! Granted, I don't watch MTV too often, but that was the most chilling, wrenching music video I've ever seen! Thanks!

Mum, got me the DVD of the video for my b-day.

The man in black will make you cry.

There was an introspective on the filming of the video with Rick Rubins on VH1 that I caught only once but it was really good. Lots of praise for Rick along with Mark Romanek the director, he's the one who pushed to have it filmed in the Cash Museum and at his home.

The entire album makes me feel like crying. Never have i heard anyone sing with so much emotion.

    We'll meet again
    I don't know where
    I don't know when
But I know we'll meet again
    some sunny day

What a fitting way to finish the album.

Was it a NIN song that Cash did, or a Cash song that NIN redid? I thought it was the opposite of what you were saying, but I've been wrong before. Sevendust also has good acoustic version of it.

When I bought the CD, American IV: The Man Comes Around, it came with a bonus DVD of the "Hurt" video.
I love his cover of "Personal Jesus".

Best song on that album by far and away is the title track. It easily stands along side any of his older hits.

Trent Reznor, (NIN) wrote the song and JC covered it. Another amazing cover of a hard-rock song is Rusty Cage, Johnny's voice on it is amazing, and as much as I liked the original, it puts it to shame, his voice commands your attention and grips you when you hear it.

As Vets mentioned, Personal Jesus is great also.

Wow! I haven't seen that video before. Amazing how the strongest characters are often conflicted with the most self-doubt. The Man in Black helps me often with my perspective.

Check out Van Lear Rose. Loretta seems to have been watching Johnny with some envy, and tried something cool on her own.

I was thinking of Loretta while reading this thread, weird. I've only seen her sad, sad video on CMT a few times and was wondering how her whole album was. Too grandmama-y?

Yup. The one-two punch of The Man Comes Around and Hurt never cease to blow me away.

Sick and ashamed and happy (and the video for Hurt makes me tear up every time),
