Sad to hear. We all need to be careful out there, this was a group with a lot of knowledge in a spot we all ski a lot.

I really don't know what to say....I'm really saddened by this.

Wishing the best to the family and friends of the victim and peace with the other 3 survivors.

I'll be keeping my eyes on the Sun Valley Avy Center report the next few days. Should be an interesting, but tragic account of the accident.

Just a warning, the snowpacks gonna be sketchy til the new snow settles down. Yay for tree-skiing.

Here's the report from this mornings report:

    Details on Friday’s Avalanche Accident:
A group of four skiers were skiing on the west side of Gladiator Ridge into Westernhome Creek. The first skier had descended the slope safely, when the second and third skiers triggered and were caught in a large avalanche on the 38-40 degree, west-facing slope. While it ran less than 500 vertical feet, it broke 2-3 feet deep and propagated over 1500 feet wide. One of the skiers got swept into a tree and was seriously injured. The other was completely buried 2-3 feet deep but had a portion of a ski protruding from the debris.

Skiers on Mushroom Ridge responded to the accident along with the other skiers in the victims’ party. The buried skier was dug out after approximately 30 minutes and was not breathing and had no pulse. The injured skier was stabilized and prepared for evacuation. Over time, many other people responded to the scene including other skiers in the area, the Ketchum Fire Department, Galena Lodge employees, and other search and rescue personnel. In a narrow window of flyable weather, Sun Valley Heli Ski responded with their helicopter and evacuated the injured skier and the buried victim.

This was the 23rd avalanche fatality this winter in the US. For details on this and other avalanche accidents, visit http://www.avalanche.org

That is crazy, looks like they were prepared and did everything they could have to ski as safe as possible.

Damn. This pisses me off. I don't know what the conditions are like down there but up here we have lots of new snow with heavy winds and wicked cold temps. Avi danger is HIGH right now and yet I'm still seeing people heading out of bounds for turns.

WTF? Why are people, especially experienced people, heading out right now?

That slope certainly does not look like a killer at first look.
    Condolences to all affected.

Trying to understand this. I wanted to see a wider shot of where this happened so I grabbed an image off google earth. Never made it to that side, but I have been all over these drainages.
