Have you ever walked into Blockbuster and to your dissapointment, there are no new releases you want to see? Or even worse, you end up racking your brains to try and remember the name of that one flick that everyone is talking about?

Yeah, I HATE that.

Let's make a list of those sleeper hits you've been meaning to see but forgot the name of.

In case you forgot:
- City of God
- Secondhand Lions

Bubba Hotep
Roger Dodger (a few years old but still good).

Two Philip Seymour Hoffman flicks that are quite good:

Owning Mahoney (Philip has a gambling problem).
Love, Liza (Philip has a gas huffing problem).

Both are total showcases of just how good Philip Seymour Hoffman is. Oh, both are total downers as well.

I still can't believe that Bruce Campbell isn't more than a fan boy hero. Campbell and Davis were awesome in Bubba Ho-Tep.

Last Life in the Universe

I think it just hit the art-house circuit. I saw it at the tribecca film festival. Thanks random stranger on the street who just stopped me and handed over two tickets! Also got to talk to the cinematographer (who's done a lot of drugs) and director.

More than anything the film is simply gorgeous.

I think the cinematographer (christopher doyle) also did the new Jet Li movie coming out; "Hero"?

Also, if you think you're hardcore then go watch "Rabbit Proof Fence". The girls that film is based are simply in another league.

i have the original that came out in mainland china one or two years ago. i have to say, out of any film that i have ever seen, this film changed my whole reality and my concept of what is possible visually in a movie. the batlle scenes are way better than crouching t, the film is so vivid, so sad, so amazingly well done. i'm freaking out. i'm going to watch it as soon as i get home.

Um, yeah. Or so methinks.

But as I've never been to China it's new to me. Doyle is an amazing cinematographer and the only shit of his I've seen has been slow paced dramatic pieces. I'm psyched for what he'll do in an action film. (and from your review it sounds good)

Also - another film to rent if your video store has a foreign section:
Bullet in the Head
"The HK deer hunter". It's a John Woo movie, but unlike his american work it does not suck. And while it is violent as all hell (In the tradition of Hard Boiled, Better Tomorrow, and The Killer), it's more than a simple two-fisted shoot-em-up.

If you haven't seen Monster check it out. Pretty damn good movie, Charlize Theron puts on a hell of a performance.

Nice flick & the level of violence is intense in this movie -- you've been warned.

I had to watch this for a film class in college.

Max, those don't exactly count as "sleeper" hits.

A lot of them are well-known and had huge ad campaigns.

Like some of your choices though -- like Good Will Hunting, Requiem for a Dream, and Rounders.
