    I hate being a jong...

I guess I'm a freeride/DH jong at the moment. I've been trying to get into it, so it can be a sister sport to skiing.... alot of the same features, skills, fears... so right now I've been trying to step it up when it comes to drops. I finally feel like I'm getting it (knock on wood) I was riding around campus tonight and dropped several things including a 6 ft ledge to flat grass, which is the biggest straight drop I have done yet.

How long did it take any of you to get used to dropping stuff? 6 ft on skis is nothing, but it is just so different on a mtb. Any suggestions besides have speed and land on the rear wheel slightly when dropping to flat?

just like in skiing drops are all about tranny. a six foot drop to flat grass is not bad with a lot of suspension and some speed, but it's really not ideal. this place we have been riding lately has got a nice selection of stuff with good landings. 1-10 feet or so and soft landings mostly. great place to progress. we'll prbly be out there this weekend.

Five years ago ten feet was a huge drop on a mtb.

Try finding drops to transitions. Drops to flat suck. To get good a freeriding/ DH start by learning bike handling skills on your big bike, sorta trials stuff. bunny hops, side hops, skinnies, good balance in general. That stuff helps much more than hucking to flat. Hope it helps. Oh and 6 to flat whould have rocked about two years ago.

Gotcha... problem is, transitions are a lot harder to come by.

I find a big help to me is doing urban rides. There are a lot of artificial terrain features that improve your handling skills faster than you would expect.

I am not sure if you are on a dually or a hardtail but stair gaps provide a decent transition for a full susp. If you do ride urban on a FS fill up your tires to a higher PSI (like 70ish) so that you don't blow a rim.

Hopping up and off of things like bus stop benches, stairs, picnic tables etc will improve your balance and make you ride with more finesse than just hucking off of stuff.

    Angry

    This is a great thread.

It pisses me off to no end that I can't ride downhill like I ski. I've been mountain biking since I got my first Rockhopper at 13. Grew up riding in the PNW, so you'd think I'd be good. No. I can climb well and can handle some technical stuff well, but man...just don't have the speed skills like I do on skis. I've accepted that I never will but damn!

    Speed is your friend.

I haven't done many big drops but try and find good tranny's. If you end up going to fast and overshooting them like me, just hang on and hope you don't rack your nuts.

I think I'm the only oddball here... I'm pretty damn close to getting as much air on a bike as I do on skis. (Which, I realize, is just a sad commentary about me being a wuss getting air on skis...)

Keep up the good work, Xover.

(He said, to the girl that stomps backflips on G4's.)

You do know that 18" of air on a mtb really feels like 8' of air, right? I suspect I will always be a mtb pussy.

Wrong Alta female... (unless by "stomps backflips" you mean that one time I hit that kicker under wildcat and accidentally flipped upside down and landed on my head. ), but...

According to your little calculation there, I should be comfortable getting 42.6 feet of air on skis. I think I've gotten maybe 12' once.
