Linux geeks please help before you finish taking over the world

I have a new laptop and have loaded linux. First I loaded unbuntu 8.04 and got things somewhat figured out then realized I had no sound. Apparently this is quite common and more so with my sound card. It's a Dell laptop and the card is realtek or that is the driver and the card is intel, bit confused on that.

Ubuntu loaded lots of updates but still no sound. One of the forums had someone with my config who loaded Fedora and got sound. I gave that a go and loaded F10. No sound. I've got an updated kernel now and updated the sound driver (I think) but no sound and not much coming on their forums to help.

I'm thinking I might have punted ubuntu too quick. It is still on my machine on it's own partition but I don't have the option to boot from it anymore. Can I force booting from the Ubuntu partition again? Anyone have help with the sound too that would be great but now I just want to boot again from ubuntu.

Thanks and now carry on the world domination.

    First off, try Ubuntu 8.10...
Then run lspci -v and tell me what you see.

Then try this (depending on what chipset you have):

    1. Delete /lib/modules/`uname -r`/ubuntu/media/snd-hda-intel/snd-hda-intel.ko
    2. Re-compile alsadriver
    3. gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
    4. add the line "options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba"
    5. If the file /etc/modprobe.d/snd-hda-intel.modprobe exists then make sure the options snd-hda-intel line has model=toshiba

Ok that's the sort of stuff I need right AFTER I manage to boot from ubuntu again. The first thing I was going to do after booting from it was upgrade to 8.1. Then those look like exactly the commands I need.

Any tips on booting from unbuntu again?

Try throwing the CD in again and booting off it. It may detect the partition and offer to boot that for you. Then google how to re-apply "grub" which will give you back the boot menu.

If you're planning to upgrade anyway and don't have anything valuable on the lunix partition then just do a clean re-install with 8.whatever. Upgrading is always a dodgy process.

For your booting issue, you need to make the other partition that has Ubuntu on it active. Should see 2 partitions and only 1 can be active at a time. At some point you could even get a Partition Management package that would through up a menu at start up and allow you to select which OS and partition you want to run.

Something like Partition Magic (purchased) or a few of the free offerings like Parted Magic that you would find with Googling partition manager for Linux.

Or if you have enough memory you could just make one of the OS's run in a virtual machine session with software like VMware.

I could throw the CD in but figure I might as well get a copy of 8.10 first. I tried downloading but it didn't make it and I haven't been able to get a torrent program to run yet.

I think the problem with the partitions is the ubuntu is on the one partition and the fedora took over from a partition within that partition.

I can blow all that clean but need a copy of 8.10 first I figure. I'll see what I can get for partition software. I've got 3 gigs of Ram and 2gig duo core so I'll look into the VMware as well.

in osx you have everything linux has (well, freebsd, which is better anyway), but it's packaged nicer and it works the ability to still use all the tools i know is one of the reasons i gave up linux/bsd for osx after 10 years of use (never owner a windows box, ever )

that, and the fact that my opengl demos ran much faster out of the box on osx

I went for Uof Waterloo since that is the motherland. Didn't see UofC as a choice. Thanks I'll use that link. I think I loaded Fedora off of there and it was way faster.

20 minutes! at 580+kb/sec. Fedora was similar. U of W started as a 6 hour download that was going to take well over 2 hours in the end at 80kb at best.

ppppphhhhfffftttt Perimeter Institute, Stephen hawking, RIM, etc etc Waterloo sucks balls..... no wonder I left.

I assume all you were interested in was the audio stuff. Getting to here has been ugly and involved loosing xp and all my data. I have backups of all but the most recent stuff.

Added bonus is going to 8.10 has caused my video card to not quite work which is a common problem but didn't get me with 8.04 for whatever reason.
