Damned if you do, Damned if you don't

So my job is on the line right now, just before ski season.

I quit or get laid off.....
GOOD - I can ski whenever and whereever I want
BAD - With a mortgage to pay and no steady check, money will be very, very short.

    I keep my job
    GOOD - $$$$
BAD - Limited skiing, limited locales

    SHIT!!

Don't look at it as "damned if you do, damned if you dont", but rather as "blessed if you do, blessed if you dont". Both possible outcomes have very real upsides, so don't spend time worrying about how things will end up.

If getting laid off looks like a reality start saving cash NOW and hold on as long as you can until the snow flies. After that create a budget that allows you to ski and pay the bills. I don't know how many of the Utards have saved up and taken a winter or two off when they first moved out. It can be done. If you keep your job cool, but if it's looking bleak, prepare.

Is your employment at this point in time bearable? If it is I say dont quit, make them lay you off. At least if they lay you off you can get unemployment to help pay the bills.

In the meantime look for another job... ancient proverb: it is easier to find a job when you already have one.

It may hinder some of your ski days this season if newly hired, but hopefully you are in a better job, the mortgage is paid, and next season you will have the vacation and sick leave built up to rip 30+ days!

    Good luck.

Rule #1: If you have a mortgage, NEVER quit a job until you have another lined up.

You're much better off being laid off or fired. THAT way you still get some $$ in unemployment, hopefully enough to cover the mortgage.

If you're thinking of leaving - line something up where you can start in say April. That way you can go ahead and get canned with impunity, get a job on a hill, and enjoy a last hurrah before reality encroaches again.

I agree, quitting means your a fackin pussy.

Probably looking at it in the wrong light, like alot of you say, there are alot of possibilities and losing your job ain't the end of the world....

funny how I can't think that all the time

    thanks everyone for the advice

Depending on your situation, i.e. whether your skills are meeting their expectations and the requirements of the job [not saying yours don't... ], you MAY be able to provide resignation AND still claim unemployment. This will require a good relationship with your employer/direct supe. But if you're just sick and tired of the job and all it doesn't have to offer, well, I'd refer back to Tippster and make sure you've got something lined up before leaving.

Granted unemployment laws differ from state to state, but if you talk with HR previous to an exit interview and bring up unemployment, ask them in not so many words, "...if I were unable to find suitable employment within an acceptable time frame and filed unemployment, would the company refute my claim?" I believe there is a small loophole in voluntary terminations that allow you to claim unemployment even though you provided resignation. Something to the effect of a mutual agreement to terminate employment which is like a layoff and quitting at the same time. A good HR contact should know the correct verbage and if your state regs allow for such. But the clincher is if the employer will accept or refute your claim, cuz ultimately, their tax rates go up over time [too detailed to go into...].

Another question to ask yourself, will you be better able to intelligently respond to questions as to 'why you got laid off', or 'why you quit' to a prospective employer? [ assuming you don't have anything lined up yet...]

    Cool

I just lost mine yesterday. The only saving grace is that I already have my Powder and when I got home I has three other ski mags in the box. I already have two jobs lined up. Just waiting on my second interview tomorrow. I have to get a job right away so I can build up seniority. That way I get to work nights only come novermber 1st. good luck with yours wahama.
