TR: First Day in the Chugach - Turnagain Pass

After a long day of travel from Vail to Girdwood, AK to visit my brother, I woke up today to blue skies and cold temperatures. The weather station was reporting a temp of -15 degrees when we got up, so we weren't sure what we were going to do.

Despite the cold and wind, we drove up Turnagain pass to sightsee and check out the conditions. Luckily, the wind had died down and we just started hiking. 2 hours later I was standing on top of a ridge looking down the steepest face I have ever been on.

I can't think of a better way to have spent my first day in the Chugach.

We ended up coming down the left side of the rightmost peak in this picture

    Enjoying the view

A pleasant tour back to the car

Sweeet! I was looking over there jealous as hell today, that s one of the most scenic ski lines for pics. that shit is rad.

    How was the sloughing?

lemme guess, manageable? But the bottom of plopper proper can be sketchy.

Damn, I wish I had the skill set to drop into that. Looks fuckin incredible.
Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

The sloughing wasn't too bad, but something you definitely had to be mindful of. We were more concerned about the shallow winds slabs that were reactive to our ski cuts.
