    Bob Costas

Is the most pompous man on earth. Sorry, just don't like the guy. The combination of him and Katie Couric forced me to look at this forum rather the opening ceremony after about 25 minutes.

He's the best sport's caster on earth. Imagine being stuck next to Katie Couric for that long. How would you do?

edit: a tie with Al Michaels. I just dodged a lightening bolt.

He was calling some of the countries national dress as a "get-up" (so offensive and disrespectful), then said the same thing about Bjork's dress "that's some get up!", and yet Bjork's dress fabric unwound and became a world map over the Olympians and it was a beautiful moment. The guy is an ass.

Totally agree - I was embarassed for him. Between the "get up" comments, and saying things like "Here's the team from Djibouti.... you bet your Djibouti!!", I was horrified. Especially at this moment in history, we don't need to be making bigger asses of ourselves.

Ruined it for me. I'm Greek, so was REALLY looking forward to this, and the moment was extremely tainted. Need to find another way to watch...

The opening ceremony I'd like to see is a battle between the moslems on one side and christians and jews on the other. Everyone is naked and armed to the teeth. And they drag Costas and clown face Couric out in the arena to be beheaded as a pre event blessing. yeah

puhleaaaase...he was forced to commentate a parade for five freaking hours. give me a break. There isn't a sportscaster with wider knowledge and more insight in a booth today.

This is why humps like Matt Lauer, Couric, the stapled stomach guy, and Willard Scott bring us Macy's parades. It's all they are capable of doing.

I guess a positive of these opening ceremonies is there were no "Yankee go home" signs that I saw(I didn't watch the whole thing, but I haven't seen any reported). Finally we're taking those South Korean Olympian's advice.

Costas is good, but there are others just as good - Michaels, Jim Lampley, Marv Albert, Joe Buck all come to mind.

skidmark how was my first post claiming Costas as the best sportscaster an attack on anyone? AD opened the thread with how supposedly pompous he is.

Personally, Jim Nance, Costas, and Al Michaels are in a class of their own. Both Buck's father(deceased) and son are a pleasure, but aren't in the class of the aforementioned three?

I realize some people like Costas. I'm not questioning his knowledge, which seems impressive. He just strikes me as a bigtime pompous ass.

He's actually a really great guy. I worked for NBC Olympics in New York and Sydney for a little while, and had to hang out with him a bunch while he was doing studio stuff. He was always really friendly and cool towards me, even though I was just an intern at the time, quite unlike some other NBC personalities I had to deal with. Harry Smith, for example: total db.

The thing that I noticed about the TV announcers I spent time with is that they all seem to love the sound of their own voices, in a literal way. Most of them had really full, strikingly sonorous, voices, but they just wouldn't stop using them and would go on and on just to hear themselves talk. Watching the triathlon with the aforementioned Smith, for example, was super-irritating because he wouldn't stop saying things like "my God! Look at that sonofabitch go! Go! Go, you little fucker! You skinny sonofabitch!"

Costas is way too full of himself. Nobody can doubt his knowledge, it's very deep. But he's much too tight to the script for me. I like an anouncer to go out on a limb, Costas rarely does.
Give me Jon Madden, Earl the Pearl, Terry Bradshaw or Johny Miller. Please keep Berman away from the booth during ABC's coverage of the British Open, he's a butcher. Sportscasting really has lost it's edge when the announcers stopped boozing on air...

My favorite sportscaster is on the radio - Jon Miller. Had the privilege of listening to him for a number of years when he did the O's games.

All-time, you gotta go with Johnny Most.

so, he was a little bit of a homer...
