    Alaia Surfing 1.21.09

Surf photo of my first Alaia (and surfboard) I shaped. I used Paulownia wood. Very fun to shape and surf prone, knee or standing. I've only had the opportunity to surf it in small waves so standing was very challenging. I rode it prone and had the most fun in a long time on tiny, knee high waves! The Alaia makes you reevaluate how to enjoy waves!

I glued up some pine planks the other day for an 8' alaia with a swallow tail, parabolic rails and a deep concave/channel running from nose to tail. It's coming along well and am hoping to wrap up sanding by the end of today. I'll be oiling it for the next several days and wishing for some waves to take it out sometime this week! Stoked! I'll post some pics of it once it's completed.

Cool stuff man. Saw some kid out on one of these at Cardiff a few months ago, looked fast as hell and the kid was ripping.
Be careful about buying snowboard goggles for skiing. Snowboard goggles come in right eye and left eye (for goofy-footers) dominant models. This can make it hard to see correctly when skiing because you are facing straight down the hill, not sideways.

Cardiff is a great wave for an alaia! I haven't had the opportunity to ride mine at a decent wave. I just finished shaping a new alaia at 8'x19 7/8". Hopefully get a chance to ride it soon!

Alaia's being what they are just go fast. It's a different way of thinking about how you surf a wave.
