I wondered what the crap was going on with all of the NSFWOH (not safe for work or home) avatars lately so I did a search and found this thread.
The more that crap is accepted, the more it will be posted. That's why there's so much now. That's the way it goes.
I guess it's the end of an era because so many of us will now have to turn off the avatars, including me. There's no way I'm gonna let my kids think their dad is OK with the stuff on these pages lately.
Turning them off really sucks because it was so helpful to use identities while cruising through threads. Oh well. I guess it's just another reason to spend a little less time on the board and that can't be all bad...



...on a good note, it's wonderfully chilly here in Jackson tonight and the snow level is expected to reach 8000 feet overnight. It was so awesome to look up and see fresh snow in the mountains all day today.

I'll go ahead and say it, an open myself up to the predictable comments about being a nazi feminist who needs to take midol, blah blah blah.

The issue of NSFW is one thing, and since I work at home, I have no comment and will leave that to others who have bosses who do in fact sign their paychecks.

This has turned into a freedom of expression debate, which frankly, is a good one to be having, in this day and age, and I'm glad to see people fighting for it. But there is also this issue of how you participate in society to make it better. Given that we still do maintain the freedom of speech, how you use it and what you express makes a difference in this world.


But the issue of seeing the avatars of women basically objectified over and over - yeah, I do take issue with it. Do what you want, free country and all that. But just don't ever ever whine about this being a sausage fest. Most women I know wouldn't even look twice at this site as soon as they saw an avatar of a women fondling her breasts or a close up shot of a woman's crotch. I'd be embarassed to take most of my women's friends onto this board for that same reason. Frankly, they'd have a tough time getting past all that to see the amazingly cool stuff that is here.

Bottom line, for those of us who consider ourselves strong women who spend a crapload of time trying to change the stereotype, this is a downer. Is is the end of the world? no. Is it something that detracts from my experience here? Yes, a bit..

Again, I'm not advocating to do anything about it, just giving you a different perspective (and certainly not speaking for other magette's, just myself).

Well said. I too think avitars have gotten out of hand, as I can only cruise the board while at work (no connection at home). The avitars help in speeding through things, but when Lumberg walks by and sees any one of the qsfw avitars, I hit the unemployment line. I got by without them before, I'll do it again, it just sucks to turn a cool feature off.

First off, let me reitterate the fact that I consider this whole avatar issue pretty stupid. I am not offended by them, nor do I think they're inherantly bad or anything like that.

What gets me about the NSFW avatars is that they don't enhance the board at all. They're insipid. If I wanted to see boobs and skin, I'd click on a NSFW thread or one of those wonderful volleyball threads that's been on the board as of late. I don't see much point in a tiny 1"x1" pic that has no purpose other then to piss someone off who might walk by as I'm viewing the board.

It seems to me that the only purpose that they're up there for is because the user is able to put them up. They're not a reflection on the personality of the user and/or thier personality. They're not nearly as pleasant to view as full-sized pictures. They remind me of a pre-teen giggling while looking at a Playboy, while stating something like "hee, hee, hee! Boobs! Hee, hee, hee!"

Am I wrong? I can't see them anymore, so I don't really know. Are they somehow of an artistic value or of some redeeming quality that I'm not thinking of, other then the simple fact that it's a tiny, little picture of a naked woman?
