Midnight Sun Cohoho IPA 8.5% and very malty too

    Sierra Nevada

    Arrogant Bastard

    Anchor Steam

I brew a 'steam beer' that is about the best all around beer I can get. About as hoppy as Anchor, but even cleaner; with a finish like a hoppy Pils - "crisp".

I know the guys who were in at the start of founders and created lots of the recipes incl devil dancer ipa- which is a bit heavy for my everyday hop wants...
Founders most complex, most innovative, most feared and yet most revered ale produced. Massive in complexity the huge malt character balances the insane amount of alpha’s used to create this monster. More IBU’s than any brewery has documented, more than you would believe and dry-hopped for twenty-six days straight with a combination of 10 hop varieties. Dangerously drinkable and deliciously evil. We dare you to dance with the Devil. 200+ IBUs
^^^that's prob marketing hype, but it is hoppy...

How about a high alpha hop such as Columbus or Chinook and an aroma hop such as Tettnanger.

If you are going to grow your own hops for use in brewing, consider that you will have no way of calculating the alpha acids. That means that if you use them for bittering additions you cannot calculate your IBU's.

Most people suggest growing aroma hops at home to use for late additions or dry hopping.

Also, according to hop farm reports for the upcoming growing season, acreage of high alpha has increased so you should be able to find those varieties for sale.

Edit: see one post above yours.

Just to add--you can get AAU's calculated by sending your hops to a lab. If you bought them they should have the AAU's on the package. You can also guestimate, ie cascade hops range from 4 - 7 AAU's or something like that.

I'm going to go ahead and throw out a coupla more brews here of note....

    First, the wet hopped master...

Deschutes' Hop Trip... If you can find those beautiful 22oz. bottles, buy, buy, buy.

    Second, the double IPA king....

Mammoth Lakes Brewing Co's 395 IPA.

90 IBU, but has such an awesome structure that you don't get bowled over by the hops...

that barleywine is up there on IBU's (104), but i felt it was very well balanced. honestly, i dont remember it tasting like something with an IBU of 104, especially in comparison to other beers that are completely dominated by hops, like SN Celebration, which only scores a 62. Perhaps the bottle I had had some age on it. Wouldnt surprise me considering where I bought it.

the true test was when i let pechelwoman try this and she liked it, and hates beers that are powerfully hopped (ie most ipa)
