Surf school in Hawaii

I've probably just guaranteed that it isn't going to happen, but right now it looks like I'm going to be able to boondoggle a trip to Hawaii for work. Since I'm pretty sure that the whole project that this trip would be going to support is going to disappear faster than a sand castle in a tsunami, I'm definitely going to take some extra vacation days while I'm there.

Anyone have any recommendations for a good surf school/camp/whatever out there? I'll be on Kauai for work, haven't decided if I'm going to stay there the whole time or swing back to Oahu for a bit. I don't really want a 4 day camp, but a whole day would be cool. Most seem to offer 90-minute deals. Only surfed once before, so I'm a total jong.

This would be mid-late September, what kind of swells are likely to be hitting the North Shore? If they were big, I'd definitely go over there. To watch.

Throw out any other ideas. Prolly gonna try to do some mtn biking too.

Mid late Sept there will be next to nothing on the North Shore. Stay on the South.

I learned how to surf on Poipu beach in Kauai many many years ago. From my vague recolection it seemed like a great place to learn. My teacher was an ex-world champ, Margo Oberg and even my sister stood up which says something.

Hey E - your job sounds like mine. Not directly surf related but...

I mangaged to get a trip to Kauai for work and spent a couple day extra. Couple of pointers IF YOUR WANT TO SAVE $$$$$

1st - Earl's rent cars. Piece's of shit but if you are spending you own $$ after the business part of the trip. I paid $60 cash no questions, etc for 4 days car. No shocks but it did get me around with the benifit of not getting broken into at trailhead 'cause it was a p.o.s. I might find his # if you want it. Cash under the table.

2. Camp - I had an absolute blast camping on the beaches. Since I spent a week on business in hotels taking care of b'dness, I decided to spend my time camping and going cheap. The rangers only collect the camp fee on the wkday. Met lots of cool people to party with and had many nights up 'til close to dawn, general nakedness, etc. MUCH FUN WAS HAD. I highly encourage the camp method.

3. Hike - I'm a biker (road and mtn) but f'it for this trip. Hike'n is where it is at.

Fun, can't speak for the surfin' but low key trip was the way to go for me. Got to know a few local and people of like mind to ski bums (my only reference).
