NSR: The big "raise" revisited & finalized.

..that I've been waiting almost FOUR YEARS for?

    $100 a week.

I reminded them that I took a $5000 loss in bonus when they shifted me to my current location.

    No word back yet.

I'm so fucking pissed off at the moment that I can't THINK straight.

    WWMD?

shoot the hostage. no seriously, get really really drunk so your thoughts are clear and well organized then tell your boss how you feel. He will appreicate your honesty and being up-front with him. You can use that extra $100 a month to buy lots of booze.

Sounds like time to find a new job.

    Thumbs down

So when you take into account the loss of bonus, it's actually a $3.85 a week raise. Niiiice.

[edit] - nice way to hit 666 posts. I can see the horns growing out of your head from here.

I know, man ~ that's why I'm not saying anything at all ATM.

I'm trying to think of a professional way to approach this. I definitely WILL be saying something, however:

    A. To wait 4 years for ANY raise is bullshit.
    B. To wait for (4) years for a $200 raise is inexscusable.

But put yourself in THEIR shoes... someone has to pay for the kid's Porsches, right?

That's a fucking slap in the face, and I'd be sure to tell my supervisor so. Do you have an HR department where you can register an official complaint?

Step 1: Take as much time as you need to calm down.

    Step 2: Write a letter.

LEAVE. If they don't value your contributions someone else will. Don't talk to them again until you've got an offer from another company for a substantial raise on the table. Leave if you want or make them squirm and match it. You're powerless in negotiating until you can leave. Until then all they have to say is "no" to raise requests. Money they don't have to give you is money the bossman gets to take home and send up a strippers nose.

I've just discovered that my lovely, beneficent, abundant, ebulliently capacious company for whom I've done nothing but kickass work has shorted me 1 week a year of vacation for the last 3 years.

I can feel the electric goat udders flexing beneath my fingers. I see vast herds of carefully genetically engineered for high speed yaks hauling my happy bogner clad clients up undeveloped powder fields in 4th world countries. I can envision harnessing kitty tongues for worldwide power. I will be an entrepreneur.

    EP,

Tell me about it. When/if we meet this winter I'll tell ya all about it, but I won't be shy saying that I Blow Managers has got to be the worst company to work for ever.

Fuckers made $4 Billion (in profit NOT revenue) and the shareholders (myself included) nor employees (myself also included) didn't see anything. And I'm on my way to the 4 years no raise if I don't leave soon.

I'd have already left, but I was lazing b/c I was getting some cool travel for free and working from home doing about 3 hrs of work per week. Finally getting some interviews and stuff after goofing off the last couple of months.

EP, something tells me no dollar amount is going to cover Four years of waiting. Why did you stick around until now?

A $5000/yr. raise isn't a sharp stick in the eye, but divide that by four and reverse compound it. Let's just say I see you in a new gig before Keith Jackson utters the phrase "Whoaa Nelly".

4 years and a $100 a week raise! Wow, you must be a supervisor. I went 3.5 years without a raise and in almost 5 years of work my raises total to just over a $1.00/hr. It helps though that I like my job.

If you think you deserve more and you probably do I would do what many of the the others have said, write a letter or talk to your HR Dept. If that doesn't work find another job (easier said than done, I know) and give them the ultimatum you've been waiting for.

Shit, I'm making LESS in my current job than I was 4 years ago. Everyone had to take a pay cut to keep paying our managers to sit on their ass and make 120k a year. It's all about the sacrifice.

The real kicker is they "resinstated" our pay, but it was based on percentages. So, a 6% pay cut from our original salary is more than a 6% raise from our reduced salary, so I'm still below the original salary.

I wish my calling in life was NOT to be a corporate whore.

The raise is actually coming from my Boss' boss. ie: The f'n CFO of the Organization.

My BOSS agrees with me. I sent HIM an email this morning that covered some of the major points, but the summary was something like this: (I shoulda just copied the thing here..)

"Though I understand MH's position (CFO), what I'm having a hard time digesting is this: When I left (previous location), I took a loss of $5000 in annual bonus. I understand that my current job description has changed, however, as an employee - a $5000 loss of salary is a $5000 loss, regardless of the job description. That seems to be MH's only concern, so for the sake of moving forward, let's forget the $5000 I've already lost.

If anything, having been brought to (current location), my responsibilities within the Company have exponentially INCREASED, which is why I don't feel that a $5200 raise after four years is commensurate with either my abilities OR the responsibilties I've assumed since moving here."

I closed it by saying "I wish I had an opportunity to discuss the issue with an HR rep, however - since we don't HAVE an HR department, I'm bringing this directly to you - I hope you can help with a resolution to this, Thanks"

Note: I've been with the Company for 8 1/2 years. Exactly how long does it take to be recognized as a dedicated long-term employee? Shit!

MD: I wish leaving were that easy - but the reality is, I've got a family to feed, and a new house to pay for. The chances of me walking in the door somewhere else & making the same $$ to start are about slim to none. And slim just left town. I do believe I'll start looking, though.

gyptian: The reasons I'm still here - read the above.

VT: We'll definitely hook up this season - I was seriously bummed I didn't get the chance to get to Big E's....but we'll make it happen when the season hits..And yeah - I'd like to hear, since I've heard OTHER horror stories about the International Business Monster.

good response. Very professional. I think I speak for all of us when I say I hope this works out for you.

and if it doesn't, a response of something like: "on the way to going and fucking yourself, eat a couple dicks" might work well. also very professional.

I am assuming the hostage is still alive as you seem to have a bargaining chip. you just take off an ear or mail them a toe or something?

Thanks - I can be quite the Corporate slut when I have to be. I just hate being put in that position - after all, we're all on the same team, right? RIGHT? RIGHT?

Only problem is that *I'M* the f'n hostage.

I know that if I had stayed at the same job I started in when I left college I'd probably be making 30 grand less right now (only 5 years out). It's tough starting new someplace else, and moving can be a bitch too. But bitching about your problem isn't going to do a damn thing until you're willing take some action. You're powerless right now.

I've got a family as well, that's why I'm suggesting you "have an offer on the table" before talking with them again. Good luck man. Maybe you're not ready to take on the work and problems that come with changing jobs, but if not get used to the problems of your current job. By no means is leaving easy. I lived in a hotel for 2 months after my last job change.

EP, you sell yourself short. There is no reason you should be treated like this. Before you know it you'll show up to work in a short sleeve white shirt, black horn rimmed glasses, and a new flat top hair cut. don't let that happen.
