Vets - I spoke breifly to Telenater last night. He's awefully knowlegable about the area. He said he thinks that there wouldn't be much snow left at Lassen and not worth the effort. Telenater always speaks with authority. As such, we may want to reconsider Lassen.
I spoke without seeing this thread....
I was hypothesizing on very limited info and extrapolating from conditions in June. Based on previous years I would have thought that Lassen was toast, but if you've seen it from the air, you have more solid info than I do.

Forgot about this post and the fact that Vets saw it on a fly-over. Hmmm... I dunno.... could be good....Originally posted by Sierra Cement
Forgot to mention, I've had thousands of feet of great skiing in August on Lassen. Don't know how it is this year, but the NE side to the Devestated Area is usually a great call. Hitch hiker friendly travelers (usually) to get you back to the Summit Parking Lot. Be prepared for vacant stares and dumbfounded questions by trail hikers.
What are you up to this weekend, Telenater?
It's looking like a full weekend of two wheeled recreation. MTB one day and road ride the other.Originally posted by Ubersheist

Honestly, I'm having as much fun on two wheels as I have on skis (Yes, it is possible to have that much fun with clothes on and no skis to be found).

I did a fly over (courtesy of "Doug Air") 4 weeks ago. It looked good then. However, I have to wonder what the heat over the past 4 weeks has done to the snow.
Closer to home I have noticed that the "patches" near Carson Pass (Not Round Top though) have almost completely dissappeared. I have been skiing there an average of once a week for the past two months. I don't believe that the patches will be skiable (or possibly even exist) at all this weekend. Like a Phoenix they will return next spring.
If possible, I would like to have the Lassen snowfield confirmed before the journey.
I just got off of the phone with a ranger at Lassen Park. At first they thought I was concerned with hiking in snow. I was told not to be concerned because the patches were few and small.![]()
When I said that I was interested in skiing, I was told that the time has pretty much past for good skiing. I was told that in June it is great and that July is also possible.
I'm going to ski the patches up at Round Top this Friday. I'll post a short TR. If it is good/worth it I would consider a return trip on Sunday.
