While on a work related errand this morning, I hit a dog, a great dane. The dog came running out from behind a truck. As I felt the tires run over the dog I feared the worse. I got out of the car and the dog was wimpering laying in the middle of the road. Just as I got to it, it stood up and hobbled onto the front lawn of a neighboring home. There were about 10 people outside who witnessed it, most of them kids. The dog was limping pretty bad. Seeing as I work for the City, I immediately dialed Animal Services. As I was waiting for them to show up, one of the neighbors told me that the dog was always running loose in their neighborhood. They said it was a friendly dog and played with all of the neighborhood kids. Then they told me that it had been hit in front of their house before. By this point I had calmed the dog pretty much. It had some good road rash on its hind legs and a cut lip, but seemd to be ok. There was a big poodle of some sort of dog juice in the road, don't know what it was, but think the dog I was relieved when the dog was able to jump up into the dog catchers truck. Luckily the dog had some tags on it, so we drove it over to its home, no one answered the phone or the door.
If you are a dog owner, please make sure your dogs don't run loose. It is a terrible feeling knowing that you just hit a dog and expecting it to be completely dead. My Public Service Announcement for the day.
