    Unhappy Knee bone bruise !!

okay so about 5 to 6 weeks ago....

i was skating a bowl and fell about 5to6 feet in to flat, i landed basically on one knee and it swole up immediatley, i went to the ER and they removed blood from the swell above the knee cap which deflated and reduced pressure, i only needed crutches for a few days , doc said i didnt tear my acl but that the bone is deffinatly bruised, the only pain is right below my knee cap almost under, as of now i can walk normal and up the stairs pretty good , i cruise on my board a little bit but nothing big, when i try to ollie the (i guess bruise) under my knee is in pain when i bend down to pop, i just want to get some feedback on people who can relate to this injury....does it sound like a bruised bone?...are there meds or miracle cures for bone bruising?...should i stay mobile and keep on it or what ? please respond

    Peace and love,

Not sure I can give you an idea from that description. Rapid swelling with blood in the knee tells me a significant injury took place but I can't really say much more than that at this point.

From the sound of it you snowboard and fell directly on the front of your knee and this swelled rapidly enough to make you go to the ER.

    Did they take xrays?

    Does your knee feel unstable?

    Is it still painful?

Any clicking, catching or locking of grinding?

Did you hit on your kneecap or just below it?

Pain to the touch or with motion?

Answer those questions and I'll see what I can come up with.

I had a bad bone bruise with my last ACL tear. It's something that just needs time and rest. I'm not sure if it was the ACL or bruise, but I had significant pain when I would dive into a pool or snap the leg straight. Took me probably about 2 months to get over the bruise, then I finally had the ACL repaired.

I agree with Vin-man... a heme-arthrosis (blood in the knee), would tend to indicate a more substantial injury. You usually see this with a patellar subluxation/dislocation, or a fracture. Sometimes with a ligament injury. When you say "the doc" do you mean the ER doc or have you seen an Orthopedist? If it's what the ER doc, you may want to see a specialist. Some ER docs are better than others with regards to knee injuries. I would have a hard time diagnosing you with just a bone bruise form an ER visit alone. That's more typically a diagnosis based on an MRI.

If it turns out to be just a bone bruise, there's not much you can do other than give it time. Ice and anti-inflammatories can help, but they take a long time to settle down completely.

Again, if you haven't seen anyone other than the ER doc, I'd follow up. I've seen more than one tibial plateau fracture missed on the initial films.
