What are CV Boots?

I'm looking at buyinga car for $300 that only needs 2 new CV boots (hopefully) what are they and how hard are they to replace.


Oh and does anybody know that subaroo forum I got saw on the powder board sometime a while ago?

CV (constant velocity) joints are joints on the axles to allow for when your suspension goes up and down. The boot goes over it keeping grease in and other stuff out. If the boots are torn, it's possible that gravel, sand, etc has gotten into the joint. In that case, you're hosed have to replace the joints as well... You can tell that the joints are bad if there be grindy/clunky noises coming from that sector of the engine compartment

It may be a tough job considering the car's only $300 and I'm going to take a wild guess and say that it hasn't been maintained for the last xxx years of life. So, more than likely your going to have a hard time getting the damn things to come off. My brother knows from experience about how much of a pain these can be... If you're 1/2 way smart mechanically and have the tools, you should be able to buy yourself a manual and change them.

Personally my advice would be to stay away unless:

a) you have the knowledge and money to replace the joints too

or

b) someone else is buying



**Please note, this could be a complete fabrication. It may be something I just pulled out of my ass and could just be screwing with you. Some who know me may say that my advise cannot be trusted, while others may tell you that I'm an expert in said subject. As for the part about being 1/2 way smart mechanically; you have not proven to me or this board that you are even 1/3 smart because if you were, you would have used www.google.com. This would have resulted in a plethora of responses for this non-skiing related question. Furthermore, without seeing the car, it is impossible to propely assess your situation.

me and friend changed out his cvs in four hours on his honda and we'd never done it before. I don't know if its harder on a subee but it was real simple on the honda.

They are actually mainly around so that the wheels can spin at different speeds when going around corners. Outter wheel takes a longer path than the inside one. Ever driven a 4x4 with lockers? That herky jerky motion is what the CV's prevent in everyday driving. The rest of the adviCe is right though.
