What I get out of Edwards "two America's" speech is a complaint of how some people have treated this country which was also the essence of Obama's speech.

    Obama said:

Now even as we speak, there are those who are preparing to divide us, the spin masters and negative ad peddlers who embrace the politics of anything goes.

Well, I say to them tonight, there's not a liberal America and a conservative America -- there is the United States of America.

There's not a black America and white America and Latino America and Asian America -- there is the United States of America.

The pundits, the pundits like to slice and dice our country into red states and blue states; red states for Republicans, blue states for Democrats. But I've got news for them, too. We worship an awesome God in the blue states, and we don't like federal agents poking around our libraries in the red states.

We coach Little League in the blue states and have gay friends in the red states.

There are patriots who opposed the war in Iraq and patriots who supported it.

We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes, all of us defending the United States of America.
    And John Edwards has said:

Today, I want to talk about what really matters. Something much bigger, more disturbing, and more important is at stake. Four years ago, George Bush came here to Iowa as a candidate and promised to be a uniter, not a divider. But four years later, we are divided, not united.

Today, under George W. Bush, there are two Americas, not one: One America that does the work, another America that reaps the reward. One America that pays the taxes, another America that gets the tax breaks. One America that will do anything to leave its children a better life, another America that never has to do a thing because its children are already set for life. One America -- middle-class America - whose needs Washington has long forgotten, another America - narrow-interest America - whose every wish is Washington's command. One America that is struggling to get by, another America that can buy anything it wants, even a Congress and a President.

2004 is a make-or-break election because we need to create one America again. And that is the one thing George Bush will never do. Dividing us into two Americas - one privileged, the other burdened - has been his agenda all along. Just look what he wants to do to our tax code. From the beginning, this President has had one solitary goal: to shift the tax burden away from the wealth of the most fortunate and onto the work of the middle class. He wants to cut the capital gains tax, eliminate the dividends tax and the estate tax, and create new tax shelters for millionaires' stocks that are bigger than most people's salaries. By the time he's done, the only people who pay taxes in America will be the millions of middle-class and poor Americans who do all the work.

That's wrong. It's wrong for a millionaire who sits by the pool on the phone to his broker to pay tax at a lower rate than the cop on the beat or the waitress working two shifts.

What's more, by dividing us into two Americas, George Bush is hurting our economy, cheating our future, and undermining our very way of life. The engine of our economy is not that guy sitting by the pool. It is millions of guys and gals in factories, fields, and offices across America who go to work every day trying to do right by their families. When we invest in those Americans, our middle-class grows, and our whole economy grows. That is the simple truth George Bush will never understand.
Edit: Left this out of Edwards' speech:

We cannot go on as two nations, one favored, the other forgotten. It is wrong to reward those who don't have to work at the expense of those who do. If we want America to be a growing, thriving democracy, with the greatest work ethic and the strongest middle class on earth, we must choose a different path.

But Obama is saying there really isn't two America's. that the mix of people is America.

guess he didn't get the class warfare memo.

Crinkle I already said I liked it. I heard him speak quite a few times when I lived in Chicago. I actually saw him one time when Jesse was in the crowd. Let's just say they don't get along.

Mr. G, edit original post, but it seemed like you were dissing it.

I think what Obama was saying was that "there shouldn't be 2 america's" I know his words weren't exactly that, but as American values we shouldn't be so divided. Understood you are a staunch republican and everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Exactly - there isn't two Americas. The appearance of two Americas has been created by the "spin masters and negative ad peddlers." In reality we are one people living in one country with the same patriotism, ideals and beliefs (hopefully). "E pluribus unum. Out of many, one"

Edwards spin on this is that we have been divided by the people in power who grease their corporate buddies palms while letting the little man drown in a sea of dispair.

Both are artifically created situations and not the true heart of this country.

I believe we understand each other, we are just stating it differently.

Obama sends a message of America having an abundance of opportunities. whereas, Edwards incites a feeling of victimhood with the Two America's. I just don't see it. I guess it depends on what you think opportunity is.

wasn't it Bill Gates who said "Your parents looked at flipping burgers as an opportunity." That being said, said flipped burgers were once looked at as an affordable way of feeding a family of four. Not the end of civilization as we know it.

If he was my representative, I wouldn't care at all about it. It seems pretty harmless stuff. But, since he's a Republican, he who lives by the sowrd, dies by the sword, so they say...
What killed him wasn't directly the revelations - it was him telling the local Republican party that nothing interesting would come out in the divorce proceedings, then the public finding out he wanted to get it on in public, but his wife didn't. Very dumb idea to lie to your backers.

I don't really care what Kerry and Edwards say from here to November 2. The question

Maybe I am crazy, but tonight it looked like Mrs. Edwards was trying to be a bit, shall we say Jackie-O. I am basing my comment simply on looks. She had the whole 60's big wavey do going on and, according to my wife, a 60's style dress. Coincidence, or voter psycology to capitalize on the hype around Edwards' youth and so called good looks?
