Here's today's summit report from Mt. Washington:

    03:23 AM Fri Aug 06, 2004 EDT
The summit received a preview of fall weather Thursday—and its only the first week of August! Temperatures dipping into the 30’s by late afternoon, along with clouds drifting over the summit, made conditions seem quite raw for “summer”.

Cultural observations confirmed what the weather instruments were indicating. The summit team was seen pulling duffle bags from underneath their bunks to retrieve hats that have been stored since mid June. Hikers appeared on the summit and headed into the Sherman Adams building to warm up.

Although the temperature is still above freezing as I write this note (32.6 F), the observation deck railing has a layer of ice on it, and crunchy sounds can be detected while walking across frosted parts of the deck!

Hopefully summer will return after this early visit by fall, but putting a hat on aims my thoughts toward winter!

I was in happy summer bike riding mode for the last couple months until somebody mentioned snow. Haven't been able to get it out of my head all week. Dammit I want my ignorance back.

It's been chilly in the morning (50's) for a few days now here in CT. Hopefully it will stay this way for the remainder of August!

I don't recall ever having a cold snap like this during the 1st week of August. It's downright fall-like.

Perhaps an indicator of something I do not dare to mention.

Dude, I am forgoing the trip this season. First, the group I was going with slowly dissolved and then my house remodeling project has escalated in cost exponentially (looks great though...I have the coolest tropical 3-season porch around ). So I'm saving my flier miles for next summer.

    When are you going?

I was about to leave Truckee (near Tahoe) on Monday early morning, and there was FROST on my windows!!

But as I headed to Sacramento, the radio forcasted a 104 degree day, and there was a fire along the way destroying one of my favorite places to hike. I'm so sad

You guys going to South America really, really suck. I'm so fukking happy for you.

I may have to ditch all my tentative plans at the end of this month and go skiing somewhere, anywhere, on August 28th.

Sprite - I thought Las Lenas or wherever was totally ON for you?! So sorry about the remodeling project!! heh.

Yeah, I was bummed...and also the group I was going with bailed bit by bit. Guess it wasn't meant to be this summer. But we did a stint in Puerto Rico a few weeks ago that sort of tamed my wanderlust. I'll still miss the snow in August though. That woulda been great.

Got season passes for the 1st time this year so that's making the pain a little easier to bear. Now let it snow!

Maybe NEXT summer?! Yahoo!! I can't decide if I want to plan for the summit, the Europe mini (always in the back of my head...) or skip it all and just go up to Whistler. Eh, I can't do that. I have to attend the summit. How about you, will you be there?

Man, august is the worst. We will have snow being left on the peaks around here in less than a month! Sweet.
