    U.P. WTF IS UP

I've been looking over weather data for the past few weeks for the U.P., more specifically the Keweenaw Peninsula but I haven't been able to get a clear picture on WTF is going on up there. Any help with making this more clear would be greatly appreciated as I was tentatively planning on making a trip up Thanksgiving weekend if there was snow to be found.

    Thanks

The coefficent of desireability is inversly proportionate to the degree of availability.

    Looks like thats from http://www.johndee.com/

Maybe you know that site already but if not I've found it helpful for upper midwest snow outlooks -- and east as well. Quite accurate (and honest about unknowns).

Nothing to play in up here, just a couple inches of old crusty snow.

Forecast looks like some serious nukage for this weekend? If there is any truth in this I will probably make the pilgrimage up on Friday... Can anyone confirm this?

I understand your impatience, but I'd wait a few weeks. We'd need a good foot or so to even think about wrecking some skis on mostly grassy slopes. We'd need two+ feet to make it good enough to wreck skis on anything really worth hiking. I don't really see either of those happening soon enough to make it worth driving up Friday. We still don't have anything.

Johndee is great for getting the heads up on dumps days or weeks in the future, but it needs to be tempered with weather.com, wunderground, etc. to get a real picture of what's going to happen in the near term. It does look like the LES machine will get going again next week, which is awesome. So maybe soon.

Yes - if I had a dime for every time Johndee overestimated potential snowfall, I'd have about $3.50. Props to him for the STOKAGE!!!, but you have to take those forecasts with a grain of salt. Of course, sometimes it's dead-on or way under.

The remorseless LES monster is preparing to devour the Keweenaw for the next four days.

... LAKE EFFECT SNOW WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 PM EST FRIDAY...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MARQUETTE HAS ISSUED A LAKE EFFECT SNOW WARNING FOR HEAVY LAKE EFFECT SNOW... WHICH IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 PM EST FRIDAY. THE LAKE EFFECT SNOW ADVISORY IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT.

LOOK FOR LAKE EFFECT SNOW SHOWERS TO BECOME HEAVY TONIGHT AND CONTINUE INTO FRIDAY AFTERNOON. THERE IS THE POTENTIAL FOR AN INTENSE LAKE EFFECT SNOW BAND... WITH SNOWFALL RATES OF 2 INCHES PER HOUR. AS MUCH AS 7 TO 11 INCHES OF SNOW IS EXPECTED TO FALL TODAY AND TONIGHT. EXPECT THE HIGHEST AMOUNTS FROM TWIN LAKES TO PAINESDALE.
    Awesome. It's about friggin time.

Went for a short hike today before dawn - didn't hit anything on the way down. Granted, I was on 120mm skis.

My first turns of the season were sweet and deep, despite being awkward and tired. That first hike's always brutal for me, no matter how much I try to stay in shape during the Oct/Nov tweener season.
