uh, i dont know. first thing that came to mind is since gif is proprietary (until recently in the us) lzw compression algorithm that maybe mozilla shipped without gif support. Most little icons like that are gifs. But i couldnt find any references to it in the mozilla website.
I dont know what os you use, but i have mozilla 1.5 on redhat 9 and have no problems with gif s and don't recall having to do anything to make it work.
